תחרות תוך-מינית מתרחשת כאשר בני אותו מין מתחרים על משאב מוגבל באותו זמן1. לעומת זאת, תחרות בין מינים מתרחשת בין חברים משני מינים שונים2. התחרות הבין-מינית מחולקת לשני סוגים, כולל התערבות (מותאמת) וניצול (תחרות), והיא מתעוררת בהתאם לסוג המשאב שבמחלוקת, כגון מזון וטריטוריה3.
קיומן של היררכיות חברתיות אינו אפשרי ללא יחסים דומיננטיים-כנועים (DSR). דומיננטיות מוצגת כ"מנצחת" וככפיפות כ"הפסד" בתוך זוגות של בעלי חיים4. עם זאת, DSR מופיעים לא רק בזוגות אלא גם בקבוצות של שלושה או יותר. בשנת 1922 תיאר תורליף שילדרופ-אבה את היררכיית הדומיננטיות בתרנגולות הבית. סימני ההיכר העיקריים בין בעלי החיים הדומיננטיים והכפופים להם היו בילוי זמן אצל המאכיל והתנהגות תוקפנית. היררכיית הדומיננטיות מחולקת לשתי צורות: ליניארית ולא ליניארית5. דומיננטיות ליניארית כוללת שתי קבוצות, A ו-B. בפרדיגמה זו של יחסים טרנזיטיביים6, קבוצה A שולטת בקבוצה B, או קבוצה B שולטת בקבוצה A. דומיננטיות לא ליניארית מתרחשת כאשר יש לפחות קשר מעגלי אחד: A שולט ב-B, B שולט ב-C ו-C שולט ב-A7.
מודלים להערכת התנהגות דומיננטית-כנועה קיימים עבור מינים שונים, כולל מכרסמים, ציפורים8, פרימטים לא אנושיים 9,10,11 ובני אדם 12. השיטה הדומיננטית-כנועה מיוצגת היטב בספרות ויושמה כמודל להערכת מאניה ודיכאון13, כמו גם פעילות תרופות נוגדות דיכאון14. מודל זה שימש לחקר סטרס מוקדם בחיים לאחר פרידה אימהית בחולדות בוגרות15. ניתן לחלק את פרדיגמות DSR לשלושה מודלים: הפחתת מודל ההתנהגות הדומיננטית 13,16, הפחתת מודל ההתנהגות הכנועה14, והיפוך קלונידין של מודל הדומיננטיות17.
מחקר זה מדגים חקירה של DSR באמצעות משימות המבוססות על תחרות מזון. יתרונותיה של שיטה זו הם יכולת השחזור הקלה שלה והיכולת להתבונן ולנתח במדויק התנהגות דומיננטית-כנועה. בנוסף, המשימה ההתנהגותית הדומיננטית-כנועה מסתמכת על מזון ולא על טריטוריה, בניגוד למשימות התנהגותיות דומות, מה שהופך את המשימה ההתנהגותית הזו לזולה ופשוטה יותר והחוקרים אינם צריכים לעבור הכשרה מסובכת כדי לבצע את המשימה ולעבד את הנתונים.
המטרה הכוללת של המחקר הנוכחי היא להדגים את ההתפתחות של DSR לאחר פגיעה מוחית טראומטית (TBI). פגיעה מוחית טראומטית נקשרת לליקויים חברתיים, דיכאון וחרדה. המודל של גרימת TBI הוא מודל סטנדרטי פשוט ויעיל הכולל גרימת פגיעה מוחית טראומטית באמצעות מכשיר הקשה נוזלי18,19.
