외상성 뇌 손상(TBI)은 머리에 가해지는 갑작스러운 힘으로 인해 발생합니다. 신체적 충격으로 인한 1차 부상 후, TBI 생존자는 일반적으로 초기 손상에 대한 생리적 반응과 관련된 인지 장애 및 신경학적 기능 장애를 포함한 2차 손상을 경험합니다1. 전 세계적으로 매년 약 6,900만 명이 TBI를 앓고 있는 것으로 추정된다 2. 미국에서만 매년 약 250만 건의 TBI 관련 응급실 방문 및 입원이 발생하며, TBI는 어린이와 청소년의 장애 및 사망의 주요 원인 중 하나입니다3. TBI는 경증, 중등도 또는 중증으로 분류할 수 있으며, 경증 TBI(mTBI)는 TBI 사례의 약 70%-90%를 차지한다4. 조직학적 및 인지적 TBI 병리는 손상 후 몇 분에서 몇 시간 이내에 발생할 수 있으며, TBI의 영향은 초기 손상 후 수개월에서 수년 동안 지속될 수 있다5.
실험 모델의 개발은 TBI의 효과와 기본 메커니즘을 이해하는 데 중요한 역할을 했습니다. 이러한 모델 중 하나인 LFPI(Lateral Fluid Percussion Injury)는 일반적으로 생체 내에서 TBI를 평가하는 데 사용됩니다.
