RPEは、神経網膜と血管脈絡膜の間に位置する色素細胞のユニークな単層で構成されており、光伝達を含む正常な網膜機能の発生と維持においてよく認識されている役割を持っています1,2。最近では、RPEは眼の成長調節3、したがって近視4の発症において追加の重要な役割を割り当てられています。この割り当ては、網膜と脈絡膜の間に介在するRPEの重要な位置と、眼の成長、したがって屈折異常が局所的に調節されていることが広く受け入れられていることに基づいています5。RPEは、増殖調節信号の想定源である網膜を、中継信号の2つの標的である脈絡膜および強膜に連結する信号中継として重要な役割を果たすと考えられている6,7,8。
