סרטנים טפיליים חשובים באקולוגיה ובתולדות החיים של דגי שונית. הביומסה והאנרגיה שהם מוציאים מהפונדקאים שלהם הם ניכרים ומשפיעים על התנהגות, פיזיולוגיה והישרדות1. סרטנים איזופודים גנתידים מייצגים את הקבוצה הבולטת ביותר של טפילי דגים במערכות שוניות טרופיות וסובטרופיות, שם הם נפוצים ומגוונים2,3 והם פריט המזון העיקרי של דגים נקיים 4,5. גודל הגנתיאידים הוא בדרך כלל 1-3 מ"מ. יש להם תולדות חיים יוצאות דופן שבהן רק שלושת שלבי הנעורים ניזונים מהדם ומנוזלי הגוף של דגים 6,7. הם פעילים ביותר בלילה 8,9, ובעוד שנראה כי הראייה משחקת תפקיד כלשהו, מציאת פונדקאי 10 מסתמכת במידה רבה על רמזי ריח כדי למצוא מארחים11,12. כל אחד משלושת שלבי ההאכלה הצעירים ניזון מדג פונדקאי יחיד, כאשר כל מזון מופרד בשלב ההתכה. לאחר ההזנה הסופית, הזחלים בשלב השלישי עוברים מטמורפוזה למבוגרים שאינם ניזונים, אשר מתרבים ואז מתים. בהתחשב בכך שהאכלה דורשת קשר קצר בלבד עם הפונדקאי, בעוד שכל מרווח בין האכלות נמשך ימים, הגנתיאידים מבלים את רוב חייהם החופשיים בבנטוס.

בנוסף לדגים נקיים יותר, אוכלוסיות מכרסמים יכולות להיות מושפעות מדגים טורפים זעירים אחרים24, כמו גם אלמוגים25,26. נראה כי להתחממות האוקיינוס ולאובדן הנלווה של אלמוגים חיים יש השפעות מנוגדות על גנתיאידים27,28,29.
בהתחשב בחשיבותם האקולוגית הברורה ובהשפעה הצפויה של שינויים סביבתיים אנתרופוגניים על אוכלוסיותיהם, יש סיבות משכנעות לכלול אותם במחקרים אקולוגיים של שוניות אלמוגים. עם זאת, היסטוריית החיים הייחודית שלהם והמספר הקטן של החוקרים החוקרים אותם יוצרים מחסום לפיתוח, יישום והפצה של שיטות דגימה אמינות הניתנות לשחזור כדי לאסוף אותם למחקר.
