Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to characterize the various structures of submonolayer and near-monolayer coverages of benzene (C6H6) on Au[111] at 4 K. At low coverage, benzene is found to adsorb preferentially at the top of the Au monatomic steps and is weakly adsorbed on the terraces. At near-monolayer coverage, benzene was found to form several long-range commensurate overlayer structures that depend on the regions of the reconstructed Au[111] surface, namely a (radical 52 x radical 52)R13.9 degrees structure over the hcp regions and a (radical 133 x radical 133)R17.5 degrees "pinwheel" structure over the fcc regions. Time-lapse imaging revealed concerted cascade motion of the benzene molecules in the (radical 133 x radical 133)R17.5 degrees pinwheel overlayer. We demonstrate that the observed cascade motion is a result of concerted molecular motion and not independent random motion.

Benzene on Au[111] at 4 K: monolayer growth and tip-induced molecular cascades.

Long-range intermolecular interactions mediated by the surface are believed to be responsible for many effects in surface science, including molecular ordering, formation of nanostructures, and aligning reactive intermediates in catalysis. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe the weak substrate-mediated interactions in benzene overlayers on Au{111} at 4 K. Using an automated procedure to monitor single molecule motion, we are able to quantify the substrate-mediated interaction strength. We explain quantitatively both the kinetics of the benzene motion and the thermodynamics that determine the packing structures benzene adopts in this system in light of these substrate-mediated interactions.

Substrate-mediated intermolecular interactions: a quantitative single molecule analysis.

We have observed nitro-functionalized oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) molecules exhibiting motion up and down Au{111} substrate monatomic step edges within host self-assembled monolayers of n-alkanethiols, independent of previously observed conductance switching. Single molecules have been imaged with scanning tunneling microscopy to place-exchange reversibly between the top and bottom of monatomic substrate step edges.

Cross-step place-exchange of oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) molecules.

We report the observation and manipulation of hydrogen atoms beneath the surface of a Pd[111] crystal by using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. These subsurface hydride sites have been postulated to have critical roles in hydrogen storage, metal embrittlement, fuel cells, and catalytic reactions, but they have been neither observed directly nor selectively populated previously. We demonstrate that the subsurface region of Pd can be populated with hydrogen atoms from the bulk by applying voltage pulses from a scanning tunneling microscope tip. This phenomenon is explained with an inelastic excitation mechanism, whereby hydrogen atoms in the bulk are excited by tunneling electrons and are promoted to more stable sites in the subsurface region. We show that this selectively placed subsurface hydride affects the electronic, geometric, and chemical properties of the surface. Specifically, we observed the effects of hydride formation on surface deformation and charge and on adsorbed hydrogen on the surface. Hydrogen segregation and overlayer vacancy ordering on the Pd[111] have been characterized and explained in terms of the surface changes attributable to selective hydrogen occupation of subsurface hydride sites in Pd[111].

Observation and manipulation of subsurface hydride in Pd[111] and its effect on surface chemical, physical, and electronic properties.

Six customized phenylene-ethynylene-based oligomers have been studied for their electronic properties using scanning tunneling microscopy to test hypothesized mechanisms of stochastic conductance switching. Previously suggested mechanisms include functional group reduction, functional group rotation, backbone ring rotation, neighboring molecule interactions, bond fluctuations, and hybridization changes. Here, we test these hypotheses experimentally by varying the molecular designs of the switches; the ability of the molecules to switch via each hypothetical mechanism is selectively engineered into or out of each molecule. We conclude that hybridization changes at the molecule-surface interface are responsible for the switching we observe.

Molecular engineering and measurements to test hypothesized mechanisms in single molecule conductance switching.

The study of charge transport through increasingly complex small molecules will benefit from a detailed understanding of how contaminants from the environment affect molecular conduction. This should provide a clearer picture of the electronic characteristics of molecules by eliminating interference from adsorbed species. Here we use magnetically assembled microsphere junctions incorporating thiol monolayers to provide insight into changing electron transport characteristics resulting from exposure to air. Using this technique, current-voltage analysis and inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy (IETS) demonstrate that the primary interaction affecting molecular conduction is rapid hydration at the gold-sulphur contacts. We use IETS to present evidence for changing mechanisms of charge transport as a result of this interaction. The detrimental effects on molecular conduction discussed here are important for understanding electron transport through gold-thiol molecular junctions once exposed to atmospheric conditions.

Effects of hydration on molecular junction transport.

Real-time measurements of conductance switching and motion of single oligo(phenylene ethynylene) molecules.

The experimental measurement and modeling of liquid chemical agent spread and sorption on a porous substrate are described. Experimental results with the nerve agent O-ethyl S-(2-diisopropylaminoethyl) methylphosphonothiolate (VX) demonstrate that the wetted imprint volume increases, even after the sessile drop volume is exhausted. This indicates the wetted imprint is only partially saturated, and a multiphase flow problem formulation is needed to predict the VX fate in porous substrates. Three characteristics and their changes in time: (i) sessile volume remaining, (ii) wetted imprint area on the sand surface where the droplet is deposited, and (iii) VX penetration depth into sand, are computed numerically and compared to experimentally measured values. A very good qualitative and quantitative agreement was found between the numerical and experimental results. These numerical and experimental methods can be used to determine the spread and sorption of hazardous materials into a variety of substrates.

Experimental and numerical study of spread and sorption of VX sessile droplets into medium grain-size sand.

Chemical warfare agent simulants are often used as an agent surrogate to perform environmental testing, mitigating exposure hazards. This work specifically addresses the assessment of downwind agent vapor concentration resulting from an evaporating simulant droplet. A previously developed methodology was used to estimate the mass diffusivities of the chemical warfare agent simulants methyl salicylate, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, di-ethyl malonate, and chloroethyl phenyl sulfide. Along with the diffusivity of the chemical warfare agent bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide, the simulant diffusivities were used in an advection-diffusion model to predict the vapor concentrations downwind from an evaporating droplet of each chemical at various wind velocities and temperatures. The results demonstrate that the simulant-to-agent concentration ratio and the corresponding vapor pressure ratio are equivalent under certain conditions. Specifically, the relationship is valid within ranges of measurement locations relative to the evaporating droplet and observation times. The valid ranges depend on the relative transport properties of the agent and simulant, and whether vapor transport is diffusion or advection dominant.

Physics-based agent to simulant correlations for vapor phase mass transport.

A fundamental understanding of the surface chemistry of chemical warfare agents is needed to fully predict the interaction of these toxic molecules with militarily relevant materials, catalysts, and environmental surfaces. For example, rules for predicting the surface chemistry of agents can be applied to the creation of next generation decontaminants, reactive coatings, and protective materials for the warfighter. Here, we describe a multifunctional ultra-high vacuum instrument for conducting comprehensive studies of the adsorption, desorption, and surface chemistry of chemical warfare agents on model and militarily relevant surfaces. The system applies reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry to study adsorption and surface reactions of chemical warfare agents. Several novel components have been developed to address the unique safety and sample exposure challenges that accompany the research of these toxic, often very low vapor pressure, compounds. While results of vacuum-based surface science techniques may not necessarily translate directly to environmental processes, learning about the fundamental chemistry will begin to inform scientists about the critical aspects that impact real-world applications.

Multifunctional ultra-high vacuum apparatus for studies of the interactions of chemical warfare agents on complex surfaces.

Chemical warfare agents (CWA) can be absorbed by variety of materials including polymeric coatings like paints through bulk liquid contact thus presenting touch and vapor hazards to interacting personnel. In order for accurate hazard assessments and subsequent decontamination approaches to be designed, it is necessary to characterize the absorption and distribution of highly toxic species, as well as their chemical simulant analogs, in the subsurface of engineered, heterogeneous materials. Using a combination of judicious sample preparation in concert with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), it should be possible to directly measure the uptake and distribution of CWA simulants in the subsurface of complex multilayer coatings. Polyurethane and alkyd coatings were applied to aluminum and silicon substrates and contaminated with 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) and dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). The surfaces and cross-sectional interfaces of the contaminated coatings were probed with SEM-EDS to provide imaging, spectral, and elemental mapping data of the contaminant-material systems. This work demonstrated SEM-EDS capability to detect and spatially-resolve unique elemental signatures of CWA simulants within military coatings. The visual and quantitative results provided by these direct measurements illustrate contaminant spatial distributions, provided order-of-magnitude approximations for diffusion coefficients, and revealed material characteristics that may impact contaminant transport into complex coating materials. It was found that contaminant uptake was significantly different between the topcoat and primer layers.
