Jose M. Guerra received the M.D. degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Universidad of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain in 1994. He was a Medical Resident at the Department of Internal Medicine in the Hospital Vall d’Hebron, Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain from 1996-1997, after which he became a Cardiology Fellow in the Department of Cardiology from 1997-2001 and received his Cardiology Certification. He continued as a Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellow in the Arrhythmias Unit in the Department of Cardiology in 2001-2002 and obtained his ECFMG Certificate. He was a Cardiac EP Fellow at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology of Indiana University School of Medicine, United States from 2002-2003, and at the Cardiology Department of University of California San Francisco, United States from 2003-2004, where he continued as a Research Scholar in 2004-2005. He received his PhD in Medicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain in 2008 under the supervision of Prof. J. Cinca Cuscullola.
He is currently an Attending Physician of the Arrhythmia Unit in the Cardiology Department in the Hospital de la Santa Creu i San Pau, and Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. He is currently the research group leader of the Department of Cardiology. His research interests focus on the study of the mechanisms involved in the genesis, progression and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias in their different manifestations and from various approaches, combining clinical and translational studies with computer models and simulations.
