Allen Price is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics, Emmanuel College, in Boston, MA. He received a B.S. with honors from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle.
For his doctoral research, Allen worked with Dr. Larry Sorensen to develop a method of producing coherent soft x-rays at synchrotron sources which he used to study collective dynamics in liquid crystals. As the Richard Gephardt Postdoctoral Fellow at St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN, he worked in the lab of Dr. Stephen White. Using protein crystallography he determined the structures of enzymes involved in bacterial fatty acid biosynthesis, studying both the basic biochemistry of this pathway as well as small molecule inhibitors. After his post doc he spent several years as a Research Investigator at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Sciences, Cambridge, MA. There he collaborated with chemists and biologists in drug discovery programs in cancer biology and metabolic disorders.
Allen's current research centers on developing and using single molecule biophysical as well as computational methods to study protein-DNA interactions, particularly problems in DNA target search and DNA cleavage.
