Dr. Nik Hrabe is a staff metallurgist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, CO, USA where he leads the Additive Manufacturing (AM) Fatigue and Fracture Project. He began working in AM in graduate school in 2006 using pre-commercial Arcam electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) machines to study fatigue behavior of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) lattice structures for biomedical applications. Before coming to NIST, Dr. Hrabe spent 3 years in AM industry working with 3D Systems Healthcare using EB-PBF and laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) machines to develop medical devices, secure regulatory approval, and contract manufacture using AM for clients within the medical device and orthopaedic implant industry.
