Chinese liquor is one of the world's oldest distilled alcoholic beverages and an important commercial fermented product in China. The Chinese liquor fermentation process has three stages: making  (the starter), stacking fermentation on the ground, and liquor fermentation in pits. We investigated the bacterial diversity of Maotai and Guotai  and liquor fermentation using high-throughput sequencing of the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene. A total of 70,297 sequences were obtained from the  samples and clustered into 17 phyla. The composition of the bacterial communities in the  from these two soy sauce aroma-style Chinese liquors was the same, although some bacterial species changed in abundance. Between the  and liquor fermentation samples, 12 bacterial phyla increased. The abundance of  and  increased in the liquor fermentation. This study has used high-throughput sequencing to provide new insights into the bacterial composition of the Chinese liquor Daqu and fermentation. Similarities in the distribution of bacteria in the soy sauce aroma-style Chinese liquors  suggest that the abundance of bacteria might be generally concerned to other liquor.

Analysis of the Bacterial Communities in Two Liquors of Soy Sauce Aroma as Revealed by High-Throughput Sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 Hypervariable Region.

Karst rocky desertification is a severe irreversible ecosystem failure. The karst ecosystem is so fragile that it is vulnerable to environmental changes, degrading into rocky desertification. Prior studies revealed the potential connections between the soil bacterial community, the edaphic properties and the aboveground vegetation cover in the karst ecosystem. However, how these three elements affect each other and work together in propelling in the karst rocky desertification progress largely remains unexplored. To answer this question, we monitored the bacterial community variations in soils sampled from multiple sites at a successional karst rocky desertification region by sequencing the 16S rRNA V3-V4 regions. Overall, we detected 34 bacterial phyla in the karst soils, of which Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria are the most abundant. Network analysis of the bacterial community- vegetation-edaphic property-vegetation interactions identified 6 bacterial herds that had significant correlation with soil Ca and available phosphorus change during vegetation degradation. Further functional simulation of these bacterial herds unveiled the change of Ca and available phosphorus might disturb the soil carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and thus weakened soil quality. In summary, we hypothesized a calcium-driven bacterial response mechanism in the karst rocky desertification progress.

Karst rocky desertification progress: Soil calcium as a possible driving force.

Petal blight caused by fungi is among the most destructive diseases of Rhododendron, especially Rhododendron agastum. Nonetheless, the metabolite changes that occur during petal blight are unknown. We used untargeted gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS) to compare the metabolite profiles of healthy and petal blight R. agastum flowers. Using GC-TOF-MS, 571 peaks were extracted, of which 189 metabolites were tentatively identified. On the other hand, 364 and 277 metabolites were tentatively identified in the positive and negative ionization modes of the UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal projections to latent structures-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were able to clearly discriminate between healthy and petal blight flowers. Differentially abundant metabolites were primarily enriched in the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites. 17 accumulated specialized metabolites in petal blight flowers have been reported to have antifungal activity, and literature indicates that 9 of them are unique to plants. 3 metabolites (chlorogenic acid, medicarpin, and apigenin) are reportedly involved in resistance to blight caused by pathogens. We therefore speculate that the accumulation of chlorogenic acid, medicarpin, and apigenin may be involved in the resistance to petal blight. Our results suggest that these metabolites may be used as candidate biocontrol agents for the control fungal petal blight in Rhododendron.

Untargeted metabolite profiling of petal blight in field-grown Rhododendron agastum using GC-TOF-MS and UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS.

This is a report of the reconstructive surgery of a patient with chondrosarcoma in the proximal radius. After extensive resection of the proximal radius that contained the tumor, the skeleton of the forearm was reconstructed by ulnar translocation. This patient was followed for 2 years, no recurrence of the tumor was found and the function of the forearm was nearly normal. This case is reported and discussed and a literature review is presented.

Base editing technology is an efficient tool for genome editing, particularly in the correction of base mutations. Diverse base editing systems were developed according to the dCas9 or nCas9 linked with different deaminase or reverse transcriptase in the editors, including ABEs, CBEs, PEs and dual-functional of base editor (such as CGBE1, A&C-BEmax, ACBE, etc.). Currently, Base editing technology has been widely applied to various fields such as microorganisms, plants, animals and medicine for basic research and therapeutics. Here, we reviewed the advancement of base editing technology. We also discussed the application of base editors in different areas in the future.

Selection of the fusion and fixation range in the intervertebral surgery to correct thoracolumbar and lumbar tuberculosis: a retrospective clinical study.

Brucellosis is a global zoonotic infection caused by  bacteria, which poses a significant burden on society. While transmission prevention is currently the most effective method, the absence of a licenced vaccine for humans necessitates the urgent development of a safe and effective vaccine. Recombinant protein-based subunit vaccines are considered promising options, and in this study, the  BP26 protein is expressed using prokaryotic expression systems. The immune responses are evaluated using the well-established adjuvant CpG-ODN. The results demonstrate that rBP26 supplemented with a CpG adjuvant induces M1 macrophage polarization and stimulates cellular immune responses mediated by Th1 cells and CD8  T cells. Additionally, it generates high levels of rBP26-specific antibodies in immunized mice. Furthermore, rBP26 immunization activates, proliferates, and produces cytokines in T lymphocytes while also maintaining immune memory for an extended period of time. These findings shed light on the potential biological function of rBP26, which is crucial for understanding brucellosis pathogenesis. Moreover, rBP26 holds promise as an effective subunit vaccine candidate for use in endemic areas.
