Born in 1999, Hongzi Chen entered Sun Yat-sen University in 2016, majoring in biotechnology for life science exploration and learning, and received Bachelor of Science degree in 2020. After graduation, Chen went on to study for a master's degree in biology at Sun Yat-sen University.

Chen joined the Cancer and Stem Cell Laboratory of MOE Key Laboratory of Gene Function and Regulation in 2018, focusing on lacrimal and salivary gland damage repair research. In the course of her research, Chen used organoids as research tools to explore the mechanisms and methods of stem maintenance and induced differentiation of adult stem/progenitor cells in lacrimal and salivary glands, and devoted herself to applying these methods to the further study of gland damage repair or gland reconstruction.
