הפרוטוקול הנוכחי מכיל מרכיב חדשני שעשוי להיות קריטי להתמודדות עם מכשולים נוכחיים לשילוב מעקב עיניים במשימות תפיסת משך חזותי. השלב הקריטי כאן הוא הגדרת חלונות הזמן המבוססים על תהליכים קוגניטיביים המתרחשים לכאורה בכל אחד מחלונות הזמן הללו. במערכת שבה השתמשנו ניתן להגדיר חלונות זמן רק כתחומי עניין (מושג הקשור למרחב המשולב עם הזמן במערכות אלה), אך במערכות אחרות ניתן לעשות זאת על ידי ייצוא מקטעים שונים של הניסוי. בנוסף לפילוח זמני זה של הניסוי, חשוב להתמקד בניתוח שינויים על פני חלונות זמן ולא בפרמטרים פר חלון זמן.
לגבי השינויים בפרוטוקול שהיה צריך לעשות, הם היו קשורים בעיקר לממדים של תחום העניין. עשינו ניסיון ראשון באמצעות AOIs דינמיים - הגדרת בחירה מרחבית סביב הגירוי שבא אחריו, ולא סביב המסך כולו. עם זאת, מהר מאוד הבנו שאנחנו עלולים לפספס אירועים רלוונטיים מחוץ לאזור הזה. בהתחשב בכך שהמדדים שלנו לא היו קשורים להתמקדות בגירוי (גודל האישון היה צפוי להשתנות בהתאם לעומס הקוגניטיבי ולא בהתאם לתשומת הלב להבזק או לכדור; מספר הקיבעונות היה צפוי לשקף חיפוש מרחבי), בחרנו להשתמש במסך המלא כאזור העניין.
הפרוטוקול הנוכחי הוא הצעה עוברית שעדיין נתונה לחידודים רבים. נדגיש רק שניים מהם, למרות שיש עוד הרבה מקום לשיפור. הראשון נוגע להבדלים באורכם של שלושת חלונות הזמן, המונעים מאיתנו לפרש את השפעות חלון הזמן על מספר הקיבעונות (למשל, חלון זמן ארוך יותר כרוך בקיבעונות רבים יותר, ומכאן הירידה מ-TW0 ל-TW1, ראו איור 3). דרך אחת להתמודד עם בעיה זו תהיה לשקול את מספר הקיבעונות ליחידת זמן.
השני מתייחס להתאמה בין חלונות הזמן לבין תהליכים מתמשכים לכאורה, הכוללת סוגיות שונות. האחת היא ש-TW1 אינו מייצג רק הופעת גירוי, אלא כנראה גם צורה מפורשת של הערכת מרווחים (מרווח ראשון) להשוואת מרווחים וככל הנראה נעדר ב-TW0. באופן דומה, שינויים על פני חלונות זמן עשויים גם לשקף שינויים בתהליכים כלליים כגון תשומת לב מתמשכת וזיכרון עבודה18, למרות שחלק מהשינויים הללו צפויים במשימת השוואת מרווחים (עומס זיכרון העבודה צפוי לעלות מ- TW1 על TW2). דרך אחת להחליש את הבלבולים הפוטנציאליים האלה תהיה להציג משימות בקרה הקשורות להערכת משך זמן טהור, תשומת לב מתמשכת וזיכרון עבודה, ולאחר מכן לבסס את ניתוח נתוני מעקב העיניים על ההשוואה בין משימות ניסוי (השוואת מרווחים) ומשימות בקרה. בעיה נוספת היא שמשך הזמן של TW0 לא היה רלוונטי למשימה, וידוע כי משכי זמן לא רלוונטיים למשימה עלולים להזיק לביצוע19. עבודה עתידית יכולה להתמקד בשיפור זה, כלומר על ידי יצירת הבדל של 300 מילישניות בין TW0 (מרווח לא רלוונטי) ו- TW1 כדי לתחום טוב יותר את תגובות העיבוד החזותי, שכן אירוע קצר יכול להיות מוטה כדי להיתפס מוקדם או מאוחר יותר מאשר הצגתו פשוט על ידי הוספת אירוע נוסף בסמיכות זמן קרוב20,21.
לבסוף, מצמוצי עיניים ספונטניים יכולים להשפיע על תפיסת הזמן על ידי עיוותו (הרחבת הזמן אם מצמוץ עין מקדים את המרווח, התכווצות אם הוא מתרחש בו זמנית), מה שעשוי להציג שונות בביצועי תזמון תוך אינדיבידואליים22. דרך אחת למזער בעיה זו תהיה ליישם גורם תיקון מבוסס מצמוץ עיניים בשיפוטים ההתנהגותיים של המשתתפים (למשל, להקצות שיעור אמינות לכל שיפוט בהתאם לנוכחות מצמוצים לפני או במהלך הגירויים. בנוסף, שילוב הגישה הסטטיסטית של התייחסות לניסויים כמשתנים אקראיים עשוי לסייע גם בטיפול בבעיה זו.
לגבי מחקר עתידי, נושא חשוב שיש להתייחס אליו יהיה הקשר בין קצב מצמוץ עיניים ספונטני (EBR) לבין תפיסת זמן. EBR ידוע כסמן עקיף לא פולשני של תפקוד דופמין מרכזי (DA)23, ולאחרונה, ERB גבוה היה קשור לתפיסה טמפורלית ירודה יותר. המחקר מציע השלכה של דופמין בתזמון המרווחים ומצביע על השימוש ב-ERB כפרוקסי של מדדדופמין 24. נושא חשוב נוסף הוא המשמעות הפונקציונלית של המדדים (הקשורים לשינוי) שניתחנו, שעדיין לא נקבעה בהקשר של הפרדיגמה שלנו. במחקר המקורי, כמו גם במערך הנתונים הפשוט הנוכחי, עליות בגודל האישונים מ-TW0 ל-TW1 עלו בקנה אחד עם הרעיון של עומס קוגניטיבי מוגבר, אך היעדר השפעות קבוצתיות על מדד זה מונע שיקולים נוספים. דפוס אחד שנראה כי הוא ששינויים קטנים יותר על פני חלונות זמן היו בקורלציה עם ביצועים התנהגותיים טובים יותר (הבזקים טובים יותר מאשר כדורים, ו-d-prime בדיסלקטים הקשורים לשינויים קטנים יותר), אך יש צורך במחקר נוסף.
למרות מגבלותיו, הפרוטוקול הנוכחי הוא, למיטב ידיעתנו, הראשון שמראה תוצאות מקבילות במעקב עיניים ובנתונים התנהגותיים (אותו פרופיל של אפקטים), כמו גם כמה ראיות למתאם בין השניים.

יכולות תפיסת זמן משכו תשומת לב מחקרית גוברת בשנים האחרונות, בין היתר בשל הצטברות ראיות לכך שאלו עשויות להיות קשורות לכישורי קריאה או למצבים פתולוגיים 1,2,3,4,5. תפיסת משך חזותי - היכולת להעריך, להבחין או להשוות מרווחי זמן המוגדרים על ידי אירועים חזותיים - היא תת-תחום אחד של עניין 6,7 שבו שיטות מעקב עיניים יכולות לתרום. עם זאת, התוצאות נשארות ממוקדות בהחלטות התנהגותיות לאחר גירוי כמו לחיצה על כפתור כדי לציין כמה זמן עבר (הערכה), אם מרווחי הזמן זהים או שונים (אפליה), או איזה מסדרה של מרווחי זמן הוא הארוך ביותר או הקצר ביותר. מספר מחקרים ניסו לקשר בין תוצאות התנהגותיות לבין נתוני מעקב עיניים 8,9, אך הם לא הצליחו למצוא מתאמים בין השניים, דבר המצביע על כך שאין קשר ישיר.
במאמר הנוכחי נציג פרוטוקול לרישום וניתוח תגובות אוקולומוטוריות במהלך הצגת גירויים במטלת תפיסת משך חזותי. באופן ספציפי, התיאור מתייחס למשימת השוואת מרווחים שבה המשתתפים ראו רצפים של שלושה אירועים שהגדירו שני מרווחי זמן והתבקשו לשפוט אם הם האיצו (מרווח ראשון ארוך משני) או האטו (ראשון קצר משני). מרווחי הזמן ששימשו במחקר נעו בין 133 ל-733 מילישניות, תוך שמירה על עקרונות מסגרת הדגימה הטמפורלית (TSF)10. TSF מציע כי הפעילות התנודתית של המוח, במיוחד בפסי תדרים כגון תנודות דלתא (1-4 הרץ), מסתנכרנת עם יחידות דיבור נכנסות כגון רצפים של מבטאי מתח. סנכרון זה משפר את קידוד הדיבור, משפר את הקשב ליחידות דיבור ומסייע לחלץ סדירויות רציפות שעשויות להיות רלוונטיות להבנת מצבים כמו דיסלקציה, המציגים תנודות לא טיפוסיות בתדר נמוך. מטרת המחקר שבו פיתחנו את השיטה המוצגת כאן הייתה לקבוע האם קשיים של דיסלקטים בתפיסת משך חזותי (השפעות קבוצתיות על מטלת השוואת המרווחים) משקפים בעיות בעיבוד האובייקט החזותי עצמו, כלומר ניגודי תנועה והארה11. אם זה היה המקרה, ציפינו שהחיסרון של דיסלקטים כלפי בקרות יהיה גדול יותר עבור גירויים עם תנועה וניגודים בהירים נמוכים (אינטראקציה בין סוג הקבוצה לסוג הגירוי).
התוצאה העיקרית של המחקר המקורי הונעה על ידי שיפוטים התנהגותיים לאחר גירוי. נתוני מעקב עיניים - גודל האישון ומספר הקיבעונות - שנרשמו במהלך הצגת הגירוי שימשו לחקר תהליכים שקדמו להחלטות ההתנהגותיות. אנו סבורים, עם זאת, כי ניתן להשתמש בפרוטוקול הנוכחי באופן עצמאי מאיסוף נתונים התנהגותיים, בתנאי שהיעדים נקבעים בהתאם. ייתכן שניתן יהיה גם להתאים אותו למשימות אפליה מרווחי זמן. השימוש בו במשימות הערכת זמן אינו כה מיידי, אך לא היינו פוסלים אפשרות זו. השתמשנו בגודל האישון מכיוון שהוא משקף עומס קוגניטיבי 12,13,14, בין מצבים אחרים, ולכן עשוי לספק מידע על כישורי המשתתפים (עומס גבוה יותר שמשמעותו פחות מיומנויות). לגבי מספר הקיבעונות, יותר קיבעונות עשויים לשקף מעורבות חזקה יותר של המשתתפים במשימה15,16. המחקר המקורי השתמש בחמישה סוגי גירויים. לשם הפשטה, השתמשנו רק בשניים בפרוטוקול הנוכחי (Ball vs. Flash, המייצג ניגודיות הקשורה לתנועה).
האתגר העיקרי שניסינו להתמודד איתו היה הפרדת התגובות לגירוי החזותי עצמו מאלה הקשורות להשוואת מרווחי זמן, שכן ידוע שתגובות אוקולומוטוריות משתנות בהתאם למאפיינים כגון ניגודי תנועה או הארה17. בהתבסס על ההנחה שהגירוי החזותי מעובד ברגע שהוא מופיע על המסך (מרווח ראשון), והשוואת מרווחים מתאפשרת רק ברגע שמתחיל מרווח הזמן השני, הגדרנו שלושה חלונות זמן: חלון קדם-גירוי, מרווח ראשון, מרווח שני (תגובה התנהגותית אינה כלולה). על ידי ניתוח שינויים מחלון הגירוי במהלך המרווח הראשון, נקבל מדדים של תגובות המשתתפים לגירוי עצמו. השוואת המרווח הראשון לשני תתחבר לחתימות אוקולומוטוריות אפשריות של השוואת מרווחים - המשימה התבקשה לבצע.

Time perception abilities have attracted increasing research attention over the last years, in part due to accumulating evidence that these may be linked to reading skills or pathological conditions1,2,3,4,5. Visual duration perception-the ability to estimate, discriminate, or compare time intervals defined by visual events-is one subfield of interest6,7in which eye-tracking methods could make a contribution. However, results remain focused on poststimulus behavioral decisions like pressing a button to indicate how much time has passed (estimate), whether time intervals are the same or different (discrimination), or which of a series of time intervals is the longest or shortest. A few studies have attempted to correlate behavioral results with eye-tracking data8,9 but they failed to find correlations between the two, suggesting that a direct relation is absent.
In the current paper, we present a protocol for registering and analyzing oculomotor responses during stimulus presentation in a visual duration perception task. Specifically, the description refers to an interval comparison task where participants saw sequences of three events that defined two time intervals and were asked to judge whether they speeded up (first interval longer than second) or slowed down (first shorter than second). The time intervals used in the study spanned from 133&#160;to 733&#160;ms, adhering to the principles of the Temporal Sampling Framework (TSF)10. TSF suggests that the brain&#39;s oscillatory activity, particularly in frequency bands such as delta oscillations (1-4 Hz), synchronizes with incoming speech units such as sequences of stress accents. This synchronization enhances the encoding of speech, improves attention to speech units, and helps extract sequential regularities that may be relevant in understanding conditions like dyslexia, which exhibit atypical low-frequency oscillations. The goal of the study in which we developed the method presented here was to determine whether dyslexics&#39; difficulties in visual duration perception (group effects on the interval comparison task) reflect problems in processing the visual object itself, namely movement and luminance contrasts11. If this was the case, we expected that dyslexics&#39; disadvantage towards controls would be larger for stimuli with movement and low luminance contrasts (interaction between group and stimulus type).
The main result of the original study was driven by poststimulus behavioral judgments. Eye-tracking data - pupil size and number of fixations - recorded during stimulus presentation were used to explore processes preceding the behavioral decisions. We believe, however, that the current protocol may be used independently from behavioral data collection, provided that the goals are set accordingly. It may also be possible to adjust it for interval discrimination tasks. Using it in time estimation tasks is not so immediate, but we would not rule out that possibility. We used pupil size because it reflects cognitive load12,13,14, among other states, and may thus provide information on participants&#39; skills (higher load meaning fewer skills). Regarding the number of fixations, more fixations may reflect the participants&#39; stronger engagement with the task15,16. The original study used five stimulus types. For simplification, we only used two in the current protocol (Ball vs. Flash, representing a movement-related contrast).
The main challenge we tried to address was disentangling responses to the visual stimulus itself from those related to interval comparison since it is known that oculomotor responses change according to characteristics such as movement or luminance contrasts17. Based on the premise that the visual stimulus is processed as soon as it appears on screen (first interval), and interval comparison is only made possible once the second time interval begins, we defined three time windows: prestimulus window, first interval, second interval (behavioral response not included). By analyzing changes from the prestimulus window over the first interval, we would get indices of participants&#39; responses to the stimulus itself. Comparing the first to the second interval would tap into possible oculomotor signatures of interval comparison-the task participants were asked to perform.

Eye-tracking methods may allow the online monitoring of cognitive processing during visual duration perception tasks, where participants are asked to estimate, discriminate, or compare time intervals defined by visual events like flashing circles. However, and to our knowledge, attempts to validate this possibility have remained inconclusive so far, and results remain focused on offline behavioral decisions made after stimulus appearance. This paper presents an eye-tracking protocol for exploring the cognitive processes preceding behavioral responses in an interval comparison task, where participants viewed two consecutive intervals and had to decide whether it speeded up (first interval longer than second) or slowed down (second interval longer). 
Our main concern was disentangling oculomotor responses to the visual stimulus itself from correlates of duration related to judgments. To achieve this, we defined three consecutive time windows based on critical events: baseline onset, the onset of the first interval, the onset of the second interval, and the end of the stimulus. We then extracted traditional oculomotor measures for each (number of fixations, pupil size) and focused on time-window-related changes to separate the responses to the visual stimulus from those related to interval comparison per se. As we show in the illustrative results, eye-tracking data showed significant differences that were consistent with behavioral results, raising hypotheses on the mechanisms engaged. This protocol is embryonic and will require many improvements, but it represents an important step forward in the current state of art.

We present a protocol that employs eye tracking to monitor eye movements during an interval comparison (duration perception) task based on visual events. The aim is to provide a preliminary guide to separate oculomotor responses to duration perception tasks (comparison or discrimination of time intervals) from responses to the stimulus itself.
