An Ex vivo Model to Study Hormone Action in the Human Breast
George Sflomos 1, Marie Shamseddin 1, Cathrin Brisken 1
1Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research, School of Life Sciences, Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne

We have developed a novel ex vivo model to study hormone action in the human breast. It is based on tissue microstructures isolated from surgical breast tissue specimens which preserve tissue architecture, intercellular interactions, and paracrine signaling.

Fabrication Process of Silicone-based Dielectric Elastomer Actuators
Samuel Rosset 1, Oluwaseun A. Araromi 1, Samuel Schlatter 1, Herbert R. Shea 1
1Microsystems for Space Technologies Laboratory, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

This manuscript shows the fabrication process for the manufacture of dielectric elastomer soft actuators based on silicone membranes. The three key stages of production are presented in detail: blade casting of thin silicone membranes; pad printing of compliant electrodes; and the assembly of all the components.

Microbial biofilms form complex architectures at interphases and develop into highly scale-dependent spatial patterns. Here, we introduce an experimental system (hard- and software) for the automated acquisition of 3D optical coherence tomography (OCT) datasets. This toolset allows the non-invasive and multi-scale characterization of biofilm morphogenesis in space and time.

1Stream Biofilm and Ecosystem Research Laboratory, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, 2Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Lausanne, CH-1015

Breakthrough curves (BTCs) are efficient tools to study the transport of bacteria in porous media. Here we introduce tools based on fluidic devices in combination with microscopy and flow cytometric counting to obtain BTCs.

Subdural Soft Electrocorticography (ECoG) Array Implantation and Long-Term Cortical Recording in Minipigs
Florian Fallegger *1, Alix Trouillet *1, Stéphanie P. Lacour 1
1Laboratory for Soft Bioelectronic Interfaces, Neuro-X Institute, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

Here, we present a method for the long-term performance and safety assessment of soft subdural electrode arrays in a minipig model, describing surgical method and tools, postoperative magnetic resonance imaging, electrophysiology of the auditory cortex, electrochemical properties of the implant, and postmortem immunochemistry.
