Hailey Morgan Shepherd is a general surgery resident at Washington University in Saint Louis. She received her medical degree with honors from University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah and subsequently moved to Saint Louis, Missouri to complete her surgical residency. During Dr. Shepherd's training, she developed a keen focus on cardiothoracic transplantation and completed a surgical research fellowship in the field of cardiothoracic transplantation and immunobiology in Dr. Daniel Kreisel's laboratory at Washington University.
Dr. Shepherd's work has involved investigating immune pathways in lung grafts following transplantation, including neutrophil responses after ischemia-reperfusion injury and fibroblast activation and proliferation after pulmonary transplantation. Additionally, she has published works discussing considerations in organ donors, such as optimization of the donor pool to improve organ allocation and regarding the establishment of specialized centers for donor organ procurement. She continues to study the impact of lymphatic disruption and accumulation of lymph-dependent molecules, such as hyaluronic acid, on long-term outcomes following transplantation such as chronic fibrotic remodeling and long-term graft rejection.
