Benedikt Freystetter studies medicine at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. Since 2018 he works on his doctoral degree at the Laboratory for Tissue Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, which is part of the department of cardiac surgery at LMU.
The aim of his studies is to create a polymeric transcatheter aortic valve implant (TAVI) for the use in tissue engineering. A strong focus lies on mimicking the triple layer and three-dimensional shape of natural human heart valves in a scaffold suitable for in-vivo remodeling.
BMEP - Biomedical Exchange Program - granted Benedikt a nine-month research scholarship to perform detailed in-vitro testing of the newly developed valves at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
