12.7 : Stock Market II

The stock market operates as a dynamic ecosystem involving various participants and facilitators who play vital roles in its functioning.

Participants:

  1. Retail Investors are individuals investing their savings to grow wealth over time. They often invest in stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.
  2. Institutional Investors are entities such as mutual funds, pension funds, hedge funds, and insurance companies that manage large pools of capital and significantly influence market movements.
  3. Traders are individuals or firms engaging in short-term buying and selling of securities to profit from price fluctuations.
  4. Speculators are high-risk takers who aim to earn substantial profits by anticipating market movements.
  5. Corporate entities are companies issuing stocks to raise capital for business expansion or operations.
  6. The government is engaged in regulatory oversight and sometimes participates through sovereign funds or bond issuance.

Facilitators:

  1. Stock exchanges are platforms like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), NASDAQ, or National Stock Exchange (NSE) where securities are traded. They ensure liquidity and transparency.
  2. Regulators are bodies like the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) that enforce rules to maintain market integrity and protect investors.
  3. Brokers are intermediaries helping investors buy or sell securities.
  4. Market makers ensure liquidity by continuously buying and selling securities.
  5. Clearing corporations will handle settlement and risk management for transactions.

Participants and facilitators ensure smooth operation and growth of the stock market.
