FDG-PET imaging er en ny mulighed for diagnostik af akut afstødning. På grund af sin ikke-invasiv og specifikke karakter, er FDG-PET fordele i forhold til klassiske diagnose ved kerne nål biopsi. Antallet af patienter med terminal nyresygdom, og antallet af transplanteret nyre modtagere løbende stiger. Episoder af akut cellulær allograftafstødning (AR) er en negativ prognostisk faktor for langsigtet allotransplantatoverlevelse, og dens rettidig diagnose er afgørende for allograft-funktion 1. På nuværende tidspunkt kan AR kun definitivt diagnosticeres ved kerne-nål biopsi, der som en invasiv metode, blotter betydelig risiko for graft skade eller endda tab. Desuden biopsier ikke er muligt hos patienter, der antikoagulerende medicin og den begrænsede sampling webstedet af denne teknik kan resultere i falsk negative resultater, hvis AR er omdrejningspunkt eller fragmentarisk.
