1. Synthesis of Zeolite H-ZSM-5 on the LCM
<ol>
	<li>Preparation of a zeolite synthesis mixture 
	Note: The final synthesis mixture had the following molar composition as adapted from de la Iglesia et al.7: 1 SiO2 : 50 H2O : 0.07 Na2O : 0.024 TPA2O : 0.005 Al2O3. Thus, the theoretical Si/Al molar ratio of the synthesized zeolite H-ZSM-5 is 100.
	<ol>
		<li>Dissolve 0.14 g sodium hydroxide in 20.30 g de-ionized water via stirring. Alternatively, mix 3.64 g of 1 M NaOH with 16.8 g de-ionized water.</li>
		<li>Add 1.16 g tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) solution, and stir the solution until it appears clear.</li>
		<li>Add 5.0 g tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) solution dropwise, and stir the solution until it appears clear.</li>
		<li>Keep stirring, while adding 0.09 g aluminum nitrate nonahydrate (Al(NO3)3&#183;9H2O, solid) into the solution.</li>
		<li>Keep stirring until the solid aluminum nitrate nonahydrate is dissolved. Note that the prepared zeolite synthesis mixture should be used within 5 hr due to its aging.</li>
	</ol>
	</li>
	<li>Synthesis of zeolite ZSM-5 on the LCM via SAC3
	<ol>
		<li>Clean the LCM before the zeolite synthesis
		<ol>
			<li>Wash the LCM thoroughly with the de-ionized water.</li>
			<li>Put the LCM in a beaker with the de-ionized water, and clean it in an ultrasound bath.</li>
			<li>Dry the LCM at 80 &#176;C in an oven.</li>
		</ol>
		</li>
		<li>Zeolite synthesis
		<ol>
			<li>Carefully place several drops of the prepared zeolite synthesis mixture on the electrode in the center of the LCM as shown in Figure 1 using a pipette, since only the zeolite deposited on the gold electrode can cause the resonant frequency shift of the LCM8. Moreover, avoid spreading the synthesis mixture on the connection points of the gold electrodes to the oscillator, since the zeolite on the connection points would significantly reduce the electroconductivity and thus the measurement sensitivity of the LCM. In addition, removing the zeolite crystals on the connection points after the deposition will destroy the electrodes.</li>
			<li>Dry the LCM with the synthesis mixture at 80 &#176;C for 2 hr to obtain a highly viscous gel-like phase on it.</li>
			<li>Add a small amount of de-ionized water (about 10 ml) in a Teflon-lined autoclave (80 ml) in order to produce the steam during the zeolite synthesis.</li>
			<li>Put the Teflon holder in the autoclave, which supports the LCM horizontally above the liquid water at the bottom of the autoclave during the zeolite synthesis.</li>
			<li>Keep the autoclave in an oven at 150 &#176;C for 48 hr to synthesize the zeolite on the LCM via the SAC method.</li>
			<li>Right after the SAC, wash the coated LCM with the de-ionized water and dry it at 80 &#176;C for 2 hr.</li>
			<li>Remove the organic template in the zeolite crystals by calcination in a high-temperature oven under an oxidative atmosphere. Program the oven as follows: a) Increase the temperature from ambient to 450 &#176;C at a rate of 3 &#176;C min-1; b) Keep the temperature at 450 &#176;C for 4 hr; c) Decrease the temperature from 450 &#176;C to room temperature at a rate of 3 &#176;C min-1.</li>
			<li>Dissolve 26.75 g ammonium chloride (NH4Cl, solid) in 0.4 L de-ionized water. Add more de-ionized water in the solution so that the final NH4Cl solution is 0.5 L and has the concentration of 1 mol dm-3.</li>
			<li>Put the coated LCM into the NH4Cl solution (0.2 L) in a beaker, and ion-exchange the Na-ZSM-5 crystals coated on the LCM at 20 &#176;C for 2 hr. Repeat the ion-exchange using 0.2 L fresh NH4Cl solution to get the NH4-ZSM-5 crystals.</li>
			<li>Obtain the H-ZSM-5 by final calcination using the same parameters as mentioned in Step 1.2.2.7.</li>
		</ol>
		</li>
	</ol>
	</li>
</ol>
2. Adsorption Measurements Using the LCM-based Adsorption Measurement Device3
Note: In this work, the LCM without coating and the one coated with H-ZSM-5 (prepared in the last section) is termed &#34;reference LCM&#34; and &#34;sample LCM&#34;, respectively. Moreover, the sample LCM before zeolite deposition is termed &#34;unloaded sample LCM&#34;. In a previous publication in Journal of Physical Chemistry C3, a detailed description of the LCM-based adsorption measurement device can be found. In this work, the operation of the device for gas adsorption measurements is presented in this short protocol and in the video protocol in detail.

	<li>Preparation before adsorption measurements
	<ol>
		<li>Tests on the effects of temperature and pressure on the difference in resonant frequencies of the reference and unloaded sample LCMs
		<ol>
			<li>Clean the O-ring, the LCM holder, and the sample chamber with acetone and pressed air.</li>
			<li>Put the reference and unloaded sample LCMs in a beaker with de-ionized water and clean them in an ultrasound bath.</li>
			<li>Carefully place the clean reference and unloaded sample LCMs on the LCM holder, which is connected to the oscillator via high temperature resistant electric cables.</li>
			<li>Pretest the installed LCMs using the oscillator to ensure that the resonant frequencies can be detected successfully.</li>
			<li>Close the sample chamber, and evacuate it by a vacuum pump.</li>
			<li>Change the pressure in the sample chamber via dosing pure N2.</li>
			<li>Control the temperature inside the sample chamber by a temperature controller.</li>
			<li>Measure the resonant frequencies of the reference and unloaded sample LCMs in the studied temperature and pressure ranges, i.e., 50-150 &#176;C and 0-16 bar, in order to know the effect of temperature and pressure on the difference in resonant frequencies of the reference and unloaded sample LCMs (<img alt="Equation 2" src="/files/ftp_upload/54413/54413eq2.jpg" /> in Step 2.2.4). The tests show that <img alt="Equation 2" src="/files/ftp_upload/54413/54413eq2.jpg" /> is significantly affected by the temperature (1,200 to 3,000 Hz at 50-150 &#176;C), whereas the gas pressure has no significant effect (change of <img alt="Equation 2" src="/files/ftp_upload/54413/54413eq2.jpg" /> smaller than 300 Hz in the pressure range of 0-16 bar). Use the determined values of <img alt="Equation 2" src="/files/ftp_upload/54413/54413eq2.jpg" /> in the Sauerbrey equation in Step 2.2.4 to calculate the adsorbed amount of gases on the zeolite.</li>
		</ol>
		</li>
		<li>Activation of sample LCM
		<ol>
			<li>Clean the O-ring, the LCM holder, and the sample chamber with acetone and pressed air.</li>
			<li>Put the reference LCM in a beaker with de-ionized water, and clean it in an ultrasound bath.</li>

	<li>Adsorption measurements 
	Note: In this work, the adsorption measurement of CO2 at 50 &#176;C is presented to give an example. The obtained data from the measurement (e.g., resonant frequencies) and the calculated masses of adsorbed CO2 on the H-ZSM-5 can be found in Table S1 of the Supporting Information of our previous publication3.
	<ol>
		<li>Adjust the temperature inside the sample chamber at the desired temperature of the adsorption measurements (i.e., 50 &#177; 0.1 &#176;C) by a temperature controller, under vacuum conditions, i.e., only with a negligible amount of adsorbed gas.</li>
		<li>Connect the oscillator to the sample LCM, and measure its resonant frequency by the supporting software of the oscillator via fitting the experimental data with a Butterworth-Van Dyke equivalent circuit model.</li>
		<li>Switch the connection of the oscillator to the reference LCM, and measure its resonant frequency.</li>
		<li>Use the measured resonant frequencies of the sample and reference LCMs under vacuum conditions to determine the mass of H-ZSM-5 deposited on the sample LCM (without adsorbed gas) according to the Sauerbrey equation2, 8:

		<li>Control the gas pressure of CO2 inside the sample chamber by dosing pure gas from the gas cylinder via a mass flow controller (for methanol and DME, from the evaporator manually via a dosing valve into the chamber), or by evacuation via a vacuum pump. Here, use a pressure range of CO2 adsorption measurements of 0-16 bar as shown in Figure 2.</li>
		<li>Wait until equilibrium conditions and a stable temperature have been reached, e.g., the temperature varies within 50 &#177; 0.1 &#176;C.</li>
		<li>Connect the oscillator to the sample LCM, and measure its resonant frequency after exposure to the gas at a given pressure.</li>
		<li>Switch the connection of the oscillator to the reference LCM, and measure its resonant frequency under the same conditions.</li>
		<li>According to the Sauerbrey equation shown above, calculate the total mass of H-ZSM-5 deposited on the sample LCM and gas adsorbed on the H-ZSM-5 under this gas pressure. By subtracting the mass of H-ZSM-5 (without adsorbed gas) determined in Step 2.2.4, the mass of CO2 adsorbed on the H-ZSM-5 under this gas pressure is obtained.</li>
		<li>Repeat the resonant frequency measurements for sample and reference LCMs for varying pressures, in order to obtain all the masses of CO2 adsorbed on the H-ZSM-5 sample under different gas pressures.</li>
		<li>Finally, obtain the gas adsorption isotherm at 50 &#176;C in the studied pressure range of 0-16 bar via calculating all the masses of CO2 adsorbed on the H-ZSM-5 sample under different gas pressures according to Step 2.2.9.</li>
		<li>For adsorption isotherms at other temperatures, change the stable temperature using the temperature controller, and repeat Steps 2.2.1 to 2.2.11.</li>

In this work, the successful synthesis of the zeolite H-ZSM-5 crystals on the gold electrode in the center of the LCM sensor by SAC is demonstrated, i.e., the zeolite is successfully loaded on the LCM sensor without covering the connection points of the gold electrodes to the oscillator. Thus, the zeolite can oscillate together with the LCM sensor, while the LCM sensor keeps its good electroconductivity and measurement sensitivity. Compared to the conventional QCM devices which are limited below 80 &#176;C, the LCM device presented in this work is successfully used for the adsorption measurements at temperatures as high as 150 &#176;C, i.e., at or close to the temperature of reactions in industry. However, the present LCM device is limited below 200 &#176;C. At temperatures higher than 200 &#176;C, the measurement uncertainty may exceed the mass of the adsorbed gas, since, with the increasing temperature above 150 &#176;C, the mass of the adsorbed gas has a significant decrease, whereas the measurement uncertainty increases significantly due to the decreasing temperature control precision. Thus, in future experiments, a new method should be developed to deposit more zeolite on the LCM, which causes more gas to adsorb, and moreover compensates the effect of the temperature and pressure on <img alt="Equation 2" src="/files/ftp_upload/54413/54413eq2.jpg" />. This could help to extend the application range of the LCM device to higher temperatures.
During the experiment, the critical steps in the zeolite synthesis are Steps 1.2.2.1, 1.2.2.4, 1.2.2.5 and 1.2.2.7, while those in the adsorption measurements are Steps 2.1.1.3, 2.1.1.4, 2.2.1, 2.2.5 and 2.2.6. In Step 1.2.2.1, avoid placing too much of the synthesis mixture on the LCM, which would spread on the connection points of the gold electrodes. In Step 1.2.2.4, carefully put the Teflon holder with the LCM in the autoclave to ensure that the LCM is horizontal and does not contact the liquid water at the bottom. In Steps 1.2.2.5 and 1.2.2.7, do not use a higher temperature in the zeolite synthesis and calcination, since our previous experiments show that it leads to degradation of the LCM. In the adsorption measurements, the position of the LCM sensors has a significant effect on the connectivity of the LCM sensors to the oscillator, and therefore on the quality of the resonant frequency signals. Therefore, pay special attention to Steps 2.1.1.3 and 2.1.1.4, in which the LCMs are loaded on the holder and pretested. The LCMs should be in the position that they are connected with the oscillator via the connection points of the electrodes (indicated in Figure 1). This is mandatory to obtain high quality resonant frequency signals enabling high measurement accuracy. In addition, in Steps 2.2.1 and 2.2.6, ensure that a stable temperature is achieved before the measurements, since this also increases the measurement accuracy. Moreover, in Step 2.2.5, feed the gas slowly, in order to have a small change of the temperature inside. This helps the temperature to become stable again after a short time.
Since the SAC synthesis method for zeolite H-ZSM-5 on the LCM sensor could be extended to other zeolites easily, the LCM-based adsorption measurement device is expected to be used for them as well. Moreover, due to its high accuracy and low cost, this device is expected to be applicable to any material, which could be coated on the LCM, in order to investigate its adsorption properties at high temperatures.

Adsorption properties strongly influence the performance of catalytic materials, hence precise knowledge of these properties can assist in characterization, design and optimization of such materials. However, the adsorption properties are generally judged from single-component adsorption measurements often at room temperatures or even under liquid nitrogen conditions, and therefore an extension to practical situations may lead to a severe deviation from the real behavior. In situ adsorption measurements on catalytic materials, especially at high temperature and high pressure conditions, still remain a great challenge.
An adsorption measurement device based on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is advantageous over the commercialized volumetric and gravimetric methods in a way that it is highly accurate for mass sorption applications, satisfactorily stable in a controlled environment, and more affordable1-2. However, the conventional QCM analysis is limited to temperatures below 80 &#176;C1-2. In order to overcome this limitation, we developed an adsorption measurement device based on a high-temperature high-frequency oscillating microbalance (langatate crystal microbalance, LCM)3, which can realize the adsorption measurements in principle at temperatures as high as 200-300 &#176;C, owing to the absence of crystalline-phase transitions up to its melting point (1,470 &#176;C)4. The LCMs used in this work have an AT-cut (i.e., the plate of the crystal microbalance contains the x axis of the crystal and is inclined by 35&#176;15&#39; from the z axis) and a resonant frequency of 5 MHz. This device was applied to the adsorption measurements of CO2, H2O, methanol, and dimethyl ether (DME), each in gaseous state, on zeolite H-ZSM-5 in the temperature range of 50-150 &#176;C and pressure range of 0-18 bar3, aiming at the validation of simulation models for the optimization of bifunctional core-shell catalysts for one-stage production of DME from the synthesis gas5-6. How to operate this device for gas adsorption measurements is presented in the protocol section.
Prior to the adsorption measurements, zeolite H-ZSM-5 crystallites (0.502 mg) were synthesized on the gold electrode in the center of the LCM by the steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) method according to de la Iglesia et al.7, in such a way that the zeolite crystallites remain attached to the oscillating microbalance. As shown in Figure 1, the LCM used in the adsorption measurement device has polished gold electrodes on both sides, which help to connect the LCM to an oscillator. Since the zeolite crystals on the connection points of the gold electrodes to the oscillator would significantly reduce the electroconductivity (as indicated in Figure 1) and thus the measurement sensitivity of the LCM, the zeolite H-ZSM-5 crystals were deposited on the LCM via the SAC method not covering these connection points3. The details about the synthesis of zeolite H-ZSM-5 on LCM are briefly summarized in the following protocol section and shown in the video protocol in detail.

We present a high-temperature and high-pressure gas adsorption measurement device based on a high-frequency oscillating microbalance (5 MHz langatate crystal microbalance, LCM) and its use for gas adsorption measurements in zeolite H-ZSM-5. Prior to the adsorption measurements, zeolite H-ZSM-5 crystals were synthesized on the gold electrode in the center of the LCM, without covering the connection points of the gold electrodes to the oscillator, by the steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) method, so that the zeolite crystals remain attached to the oscillating microbalance while keeping good electroconductivity of the LCM during the adsorption measurements. Compared to a conventional quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) which is limited to temperatures below 80 &#176;C, the LCM can realize the adsorption measurements in principle at temperatures as high as 200-300 &#176;C (i.e., at or close to the reaction temperature of the target application of one-stage DME synthesis from the synthesis gas), owing to the absence of crystalline-phase transitions up to its melting point (1,470 &#176;C). The system was applied to investigate the adsorption of CO2, H2O, methanol and dimethyl ether (DME), each in the gas phase, on zeolite H-ZSM-5 in the temperature and pressure range of 50-150 &#176;C and 0-18 bar, respectively. The results showed that the adsorption isotherms of these gases in H-ZSM-5 can be well fitted by Langmuir-type adsorption isotherms. Furthermore, the determined adsorption parameters, i.e., adsorption capacities, adsorption enthalpies, and adsorption entropies, compare well to literature data. In this work, the results for CO2 are shown as an example.

Figure 1 shows the photographs, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the coated and uncoated LCM sensor (left), as well as their X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns (right). From both, light and scanning electron microscopy (Figure 1b and c), the connection points of the gold electrodes to the oscillator are less covered with zeolite crystals than the center region of the LCM. Most of the zeolite crystals on top of the LCM-sensor are isolated and show characteristic rounded-boat morphology, with the (010)-plane predominantly facing up. Besides, some crystals additionally show the typical intergrowth behavior (&#34;twinned crystals&#34;). Moreover, the loaded H-ZSM-5 (Si/Al molar ratio of 100 according to the composition of the synthesis mixture) on the langatate crystal has been investigated by XRD and wavelength-dispersive X-ray (WDX) spectroscopy3.
In Figure 2, CO2 adsorption isotherms for the H-ZSM-5 zeolite obtained with the LCM device in the temperature range of 50-150 &#176;C and pressure range of 0-16 bar, as well as the fit of the single site Langmuir isotherm model to the experimental data, are shown to give a representative example. As shown in Figure 2, the determined adsorption isotherms of CO2 were fitted with a single site Langmuir isotherm well. Figure 3 shows the diagram of ln(K&#39;i) vs. 1,000/T for CO2 as derived from the adsorption isotherms, i.e., the temperature dependence of the adsorption constants determined from the fit of the adsorption isotherms. The adsorption enthalpies and entropies of CO2 were determined by fitting with the van&#39;t Hoff equation (see the Supporting Information of the previous publication3). The results of the model fitting show that the adsorption capacity, adsorption enthalpy and adsorption entropy for CO2 in H-ZSM-5 are 4.0 &#177; 0.2 mmol g-1, 15.3 &#177; 0.5 kJ mol-1 and 56.3 &#177; 1.5 J mol-1 K-1, respectively3.
The high quality of the fit of the single site Langmuir isotherm and the van&#39;t Hoff equation as shown in Figures 2 and 3 supports the assumption of a constant adsorption capacity (i.e., saturation loading) and enthalpy (i.e., heat of adsorption) to be valid at least for the range of conditions used. Moreover, the adsorption parameters of CO2 determined by the LCM-based adsorption measurement device in this work compare well to values reported in literature9-12, i.e., the adsorption capacity, adsorption enthalpy and adsorption entropy reported for CO2 in MFI-type zeolites vary in the range of 2.1-3.8 mmol g-1, 19-28.7 kJ mol-1, and 43.7-82.7 J mol-1 K-1, respectively, in the temperature range of 30-200 &#176;C and pressure range of 0-5 bar.

Synthesis and Microdiffraction at Extreme Pressures and Temperatures

High pressure compounds and polymorphs are investigated for a broad range of purposes such as determine structures and processes of deep planetary interiors, design materials with novel properties, understand the mechanical behavior of materials exposed to very high stresses as in explosions or impacts. Synthesis and structural analysis of materials at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature entails remarkable technical challenges. In the laser heated diamond anvil cell (LH-DAC), very high pressure is generated between the tips of two opposing diamond anvils forced against each other; focused infrared laser beams, shined through the diamonds, allow to reach very high temperatures on samples absorbing the laser radiation. When the LH-DAC is installed in a synchrotron beamline that provides extremely brilliant x-ray radiation, the structure of materials under extreme conditions can be probed in situ. LH-DAC samples, although very small, can show highly variable grain size, phase and chemical composition. In order to obtain the high resolution structural analysis and the most comprehensive characterization of a sample, we collect diffraction data in 2D grids and combine powder, single crystal and multigrain diffraction techniques. Representative results obtained in the synthesis of a new iron oxide, Fe4O5 1 will be shown.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Fiber Optic Distributed Sensors for High-resolution Temperature Field Mapping

The reliability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes is checked by comparing simulations with experimental data. A typical data set consists chiefly of velocity and temperature readings, both ideally having high spatial and temporal resolution to facilitate rigorous code validation. While high resolution velocity data is readily obtained through optical measurement techniques such as particle image velocimetry, it has proven difficult to obtain temperature data with similar resolution. Traditional sensors such as thermocouples cannot fill this role, but the recent development of distributed sensing based on Rayleigh scattering and swept-wave interferometry offers resolution suitable for CFD code validation work. Thousands of temperature measurements can be generated along a single thin optical fiber at hundreds of Hertz. Sensors function over large temperature ranges and within opaque fluids where optical techniques are unsuitable. But this type of sensor is sensitive to strain and humidity as well as temperature and so accuracy is affected by handling, vibration, and shifts in relative humidity. Such behavior is quite unlike traditional sensors and so unconventional installation and operating procedures are necessary to ensure accurate measurements. This paper demonstrates implementation of a Rayleigh scattering-type distributed temperature sensor in a thermal mixing experiment involving two air jets at 25 and 45 &#176;C. We present criteria to guide selection of optical fiber for the sensor and describe installation setup for a jet mixing experiment. We illustrate sensor baselining, which links readings to an absolute temperature standard, and discuss practical issues such as errors due to flow-induced vibration. This material can aid those interested in temperature measurements having high data density and bandwidth for fluid dynamics experiments and similar applications. We highlight pitfalls specific to these sensors for consideration in experiment design and operation.

We demonstrate use of a fiber optic distributed sensor for mapping the temperature field of mixing air jets. The Rayleigh scattering-based sensor generates thousands of data points along a single fiber to provide exceptional spatial resolution that is unattainable with traditional sensors such as thermocouples.

Applying X-ray Imaging Crystal Spectroscopy for Use as a High Temperature Plasma Diagnostic

X-ray spectra provide a wealth of information on high temperature plasmas; for example electron temperature and density can be inferred from line intensity ratios. By using a Johann spectrometer viewing the plasma, it is possible to construct profiles of plasma parameters such as density, temperature, and velocity with good spatial and time resolution. However, benchmarking atomic code modeling of X-ray spectra obtained from well-diagnosed laboratory plasmas is important to justify use of such spectra to determine plasma parameters when other independent diagnostics are not available. This manuscript presents the operation of the High Resolution X-ray Crystal Imaging Spectrometer with Spatial Resolution (HIREXSR), a high wavelength resolution spatially imaging X-ray spectrometer used to view hydrogen- and helium-like ions of medium atomic number elements in a tokamak plasma. In addition, this manuscript covers a laser blow-off system that can introduce such ions to the plasma with precise timing to allow for perturbative studies of transport in the plasma.

A High Performance Impedance-based Platform for Evaporation Rate Detection

This paper describes the method of a novel impedance-based platform for the detection of the evaporation rate. The model compound hyaluronic acid was employed here for demonstration purposes. Multiple evaporation tests on the model compound as a humectant with various concentrations in solutions were conducted for comparison purposes. A conventional weight loss approach is known as the most straightforward, but time-consuming, measurement technique for evaporation rate detection. Yet, a clear disadvantage is that a large volume of sample is required and multiple sample tests cannot be conducted at the same time. For the first time in literature, an electrical impedance sensing chip is successfully applied to a real-time evaporation investigation in a time sharing, continuous and automatic manner. Moreover, as little as 0.5 ml of test samples is required in this impedance-based apparatus, and a large impedance variation is demonstrated among various dilute solutions. The proposed high-sensitivity and fast-response impedance sensing system is found to outperform a conventional weight loss approach in terms of evaporation rate detection.

This paper presents an impedance-based apparatus for evaporation rate detection of solutions. It offers clear advantages over a conventional weight loss approach: a fast response, high-sensitivity detection, a small sample requirement, multiple sample measurements, and easy disassembly for cleaning and reuse purposes.

Nanostructured Ag-zeolite Composites as Luminescence-based Humidity Sensors

Small silver clusters confined inside zeolite matrices have recently emerged as a novel type of highly luminescent materials. Their emission has high external quantum efficiencies (EQE) and spans the whole visible spectrum. It has been recently reported that the UV excited luminescence of partially Li-exchanged sodium Linde type A zeolites [LTA(Na)] containing luminescent silver clusters can be controlled by adjusting the water content of the zeolite. These samples showed a dynamic change in their emission color from blue to green and yellow upon an increase of the hydration level of the zeolite, showing the great potential that these materials can have as luminescence-based humidity sensors at the macro and micro scale. Here, we describe the detailed procedure to fabricate a humidity sensor prototype using silver-exchanged zeolite composites. The sensor is produced by suspending the luminescent Ag-zeolites in an aqueous solution of polyethylenimine (PEI) to subsequently deposit a film of the material onto a quartz plate. The coated plate is subjected to several hydration/dehydration cycles to show the functionality of the sensing film.

Synthesis of Ionic Liquid Based Electrolytes, Assembly of Li-ion Batteries, and Measurements of Performance at High Temperature

The chemical instability of the traditional electrolyte remains a safety issue in widely used energy storage devices such as Li-ion batteries. Li-ion batteries for use in devices operating at elevated temperatures require thermally stable and non-flammable electrolytes. Ionic liquids (ILs), which are non-flammable, non-volatile, thermally stable molten salts, are an ideal replacement for flammable and low boiling point organic solvent electrolytes currently used today. We herein describe the procedures to: 1) synthesize mono- and di-phosphonium ionic liquids paired with chloride or bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (TFSI) anions; 2) measure the thermal properties and stability of these ionic liquids by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA); 3) measure the electrochemical properties of the ionic liquids by cyclic voltammetry (CV); 4) prepare electrolytes containing lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonamide; 5) measure the conductivity of the electrolytes as a function of temperature; 6) assemble a coin cell battery with two of the electrolytes along with a Li metal anode and LiCoO2 cathode; and 7) evaluate battery performance at 100 &#176;C. We additionally describe the challenges in execution as well as the insights gained from performing these experiments.

High Temperature Fabrication of Nanostructured Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia (YSZ) Scaffolds by In Situ Carbon Templating Xerogels

We demonstrate a method for the high temperature fabrication of porous, nanostructured yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ, 8 mol% yttria - 92 mol% zirconia) scaffolds with tunable specific surface areas up to 80 m2&#183;g-1. An aqueous solution of a zirconium salt, yttrium salt, and glucose is mixed with propylene oxide (PO) to form a gel. The gel is dried under ambient conditions to form a xerogel. The xerogel is pressed into pellets and then sintered in an argon atmosphere. During sintering, a YSZ ceramic phase forms and the organic components decompose, leaving behind amorphous carbon. The carbon formed in situ serves as a hard template, preserving a high surface area YSZ nanomorphology at sintering temperature. The carbon is subsequently removed by oxidation in air at low temperature, resulting in a porous, nanostructured YSZ scaffold. The concentration of the carbon template and the final scaffold surface area can be systematically tuned by varying the glucose concentration in the gel synthesis. The carbon template concentration was quantified using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the surface area and pore size distribution was determined by physical adsorption measurements, and the morphology was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Phase purity and crystallite size was determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). This fabrication approach provides a novel, flexible platform for realizing unprecedented scaffold surface areas and nanomorphologies for ceramic-based electrochemical energy conversion applications, e.g. solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes.

Preparation and High-temperature Anti-adhesion Behavior of a Slippery Surface on Stainless Steel

Anti-adhesion surfaces with high-temperature resistance have a wide application potential in electrosurgical instruments, engines, and pipelines. A typical anti-wetting superhydrophobic surface easily fails when exposed to a high-temperature liquid. Recently, Nepenthes-inspired slippery surfaces demonstrated a new way to solve the adhesion problem. A lubricant layer on the slippery surface can act as a barrier between the repelled materials and the surface structure. However, the slippery surfaces in previous studies rarely showed high-temperature resistance. Here, we describe a protocol for the preparation of slippery surfaces with high-temperature resistance. A photolithography-assisted method was used to fabricate pillar structures on stainless steel. By functionalizing the surface with saline, a slippery surface was prepared by adding silicone oil. The prepared slippery surface maintained the anti-wetting property for water, even when the surface was heated to 300 &#176;C. Also, the slippery surface exhibited great anti-adhesion effects on soft tissues at high temperatures. This type of slippery surface on stainless steel has applications in medical devices, mechanical equipment, etc.

Slippery surfaces provide a new way to solve the adhesion problem. This protocol describes how to fabricate slippery surfaces at high temperatures. The results demonstrate that the slippery surfaces showed anti-wetting for liquids and a remarkable anti-adhesion effect on soft tissues at high temperatures.

To improve the accuracy of the chloride distribution along the depth of cement paste under cyclic wet-dry conditions, a new method is proposed to obtain a high-precision chloride profile. Finally, the water-soluble chloride content is detected using a silver nitrate titration method, and chloride profiles are plotted. The key to improving the accuracy of the chloride distribution along the depth is to exclude the error in the powderization, which is the most critical step for testing the distribution of chloride. Based on the above concept, the grinding method in this protocol can be used to grind powder samples automatically layer by layer from the surface inward, and it should be noted that a very thin grinding thickness (less than 0.5 mm) with a minimum error less than 0.04 mm can be obtained. The chloride profile obtained by this method better reflects the chloride distribution in specimens, which helps researchers to capture the distribution features that are often overlooked. Furthermore, this method can be applied to studies in the field of cement-based materials, which require high chloride distribution accuracy.

Method for Recording Broadband High Resolution Emission Spectra of Laboratory Lightning Arcs

Lightning is one of the most common and destructive forces in nature and has long been studied using spectroscopic techniques, first with traditional camera film methods and then digital camera technology, from which several important characteristics have been derived. However, such work has always been limited due to the inherently random and non-repeatable nature of natural lightning events in the field. Recent developments in lightning test facilities now allow the reproducible generation of lightning arcs within controlled laboratory environments, providing a test bed for the development of new sensors and diagnostic techniques to understand lightning mechanisms better. One such technique is a spectroscopic system using digital camera technology capable of identifying the chemical elements with which the lightning arc interacts, with these data then being used to derive further characteristics. In this paper, the spectroscopic system is used to obtain the emission spectrum from a 100 kA peak, 100 &#181;s duration lightning arc generated across a pair of hemispherical tungsten electrodes separated by a small air gap. To maintain a spectral resolution of less than 1 nm, several individual spectra were recorded across discrete wavelength ranges, averaged, stitched, and corrected to produce a final composite spectrum in the 450 nm (blue light) to 890 nm (near infrared light) range. Characteristic peaks within the data were then compared to an established publicly available database to identify the chemical element interactions. This method is readily applicable to a variety of other light emitting events, such as fast electrical discharges, partial discharges, and sparking in electrical equipment, apparatus, and systems.
