It is generally believed that attention enhances the processing of sensory information during perception and learning. Here we report that, contrary to common belief, attention limits the degree of plasticity induced by repeated exposure to image features. Specifically, daily exposure to oriented stimuli that are not linked to a specific task causes an orientation-specific improvement in perceptual performance along the "exposed" axes. This effect is modulated by attention: human subjects showed a larger improvement in orientation discrimination when attention is directed toward the location where stimuli are presented. However, the capacity to perform discriminations away from the exposed orientation is enhanced when the exposure stimuli are unattended. Importantly, the improvement in orientation discrimination at the unattended location leads to a robust enhancement in the discrimination of complex stimuli, such as natural texture images, with orientation components along the exposed axes, whereas the improvement in orientation discrimination at the attended location exhibits only weak transfer to complex stimuli. These results indicate that sensory adaptation by passive stimulus exposure should be viewed as a form of perceptual learning that is complementary to practice-based learning in that it reduces constraints on generalization.

Attention alters visual plasticity during exposure-based learning.

Une caract&#xE9;ristique fondamentale du traitement de l&#x26;#39;information dans le n&#xE9;ocortex est la capacit&#xE9; des neurones individuels &#xE0; s&#x26;#39;adapter aux changements dans les stimuli entrants. Il est de plus en plus &#xE9;tant entendu que l&#x26;#39;adaptation corticale est un ph&#xE9;nom&#xE8;ne qui n&#xE9;cessite des interactions r&#xE9;seau. Le fait que la structure des r&#xE9;seaux locaux d&#xE9;pend de fa&#xE7;on critique sur la couche corticale soul&#xE8;ve la possibilit&#xE9; que l&#x26;#39;adaptation pourrait induire des effets sp&#xE9;cifiques dans les diff&#xE9;rentes couches. Ici, nous montrons que l&#x26;#39;exposition br&#xE8;ve (300 ms) &#xE0; un stimulus d&#x26;#39;orientation fixe module la force de la synchronisation entre les neurones individuels et de l&#x26;#39;activit&#xE9; de la population locale dans la fr&#xE9;quence gamma-bande (30-80 Hz) dans macaque cortex visuel primaire (V1) et des influences la capacit&#xE9; des neurones individuels pour coder l&#x26;#39;orientation du stimulus. En utilisant des sondes laminaires, nous avons constat&#xE9; que m&#xEA;me si la pr&#xE9;sentation du stimulus provoque une forte augmentation de la synchronisation gamma de l&#x26;#39;activit&#xE9; neuronale rythmique dans l&#x26;#39;entr&#xE9;e (granul&#xE9;s) des couches de V1, l&#x26;#39;adaptation a entra&#xEE;n&#xE9; une augmentation marqu&#xE9;e dans la synchronisation de la sortie corticale (supragranular) couches. L&#x26;#39;augmentation de la synchronisation gamma apr&#xE8;s l&#x26;#39;adaptation a &#xE9;t&#xE9; significativement corr&#xE9;l&#xE9;e avec une am&#xE9;lioration des performances d&#x26;#39;orientation de discrimination neuronale seulement dans les couches supragranular. Ainsi, la synchronisation entre l&#x26;#39;activit&#xE9; de neurones individuels de dopage et de leur population locale peut am&#xE9;liorer codage sensoriel pour optimiser le traitement du r&#xE9;seau &#xE0; travers des circuits laminaires.

A fundamental feature of information processing in neocortex is the ability of individual neurons to adapt to changes in incoming stimuli. It is increasingly being understood that cortical adaptation is a phenomenon that requires network interactions. The fact that the structure of local networks depends critically on cortical layer raises the possibility that adaptation could induce specific effects in different layers. Here we show that brief exposure (300 ms) to a stimulus of fixed orientation modulates the strength of synchronization between individual neurons and local population activity in the gamma-band frequency (30-80 Hz) in macaque primary visual cortex (V1) and influences the ability of individual neurons to encode stimulus orientation. Using laminar probes, we found that although stimulus presentation elicits a large increase in the gamma synchronization of rhythmic neuronal activity in the input (granular) layers of V1, adaptation caused a pronounced increase in synchronization in the cortical output (supragranular) layers. The increase in gamma synchronization after adaptation was significantly correlated with an improvement in neuronal orientation discrimination performance only in the supragranular layers. Thus, synchronization between the spiking activity of individual neurons and their local population may enhance sensory coding to optimize network processing across laminar circuits.

Ein grundlegendes Merkmal der Informationsverarbeitung im Neocortex ist die F&auml;higkeit der einzelnen Neuronen zur Anpassung an &Auml;nderungen im eintreffende Reize. Es ist zunehmend erkannt wird dass kortikale Anpassung ein Ph&auml;nomen ist, das Netzwerk Interaktionen erfordert. Mit laminare Sonden, fanden wir, dass obwohl Reiz Pr&auml;sentation eine starke Zunahme der Gamma-Synchronisation rhythmische neuronaler Aktivit&auml;t in den Eingang (granularen) Schichten der V1 entlockt, Anpassung in Synchronisierung in den kortikalen Ausgabe (Supragranular)-Schichten eine ausgepr&auml;gte Erh&ouml;hung verursacht. Der Anstieg der Gamma-Synchronisation nach der Anpassung deutlich mit einer Verbesserung der neuronalen Orientierung Diskriminierung Leistung nur in den Supragranular Schichten korrelierte. Somit kann Synchronisierung zwischen der Blindkontrollen Aktivit&auml;t von einzelnen Neuronen und ihrer lokalen Bev&ouml;lkerung verbessern sensorische Kodierung zur Optimierung der Netzwerk-Verarbeitung in laminar Schaltungen.

Una caratteristica fondamentale dell&#39;information processing in neocortex &egrave; la capacit&agrave; di singoli neuroni di adattarsi ai cambiamenti di stimoli in entrata. &Egrave; sempre pi&ugrave; fermo restando che corticale adattamento &egrave; un fenomeno che richiede interazioni di rete. Il fatto che la struttura delle reti locali dipende criticamente strato corticale solleva la possibilit&agrave; che l&#39;adattamento potrebbe indurre effetti specifici in diversi strati. Qui vi mostriamo che modula la forza della sincronizzazione tra singoli neuroni e attivit&agrave; della popolazione locale la frequenza di banda gamma (30-80 Hz) nella corteccia visiva primaria (V1) di macaco influenze la capacit&agrave; dei singoli neuroni di codificare orientamento stimolo e breve esposizione (300 ms) ad uno stimolo di orientamento fisso. Utilizzando sonde laminare, abbiamo trovato che anche se presentazione stimolo suscita un grande aumento nella sincronizzazione gamma di attivit&agrave; neuronale ritmica negli strati (granulari) ingresso V1, adattamento causato un aumento marcato nella sincronizzazione negli strati corticali output (supragranular). L&#39;aumento della sincronizzazione gamma dopo adattamento era significativamente correlato con un miglioramento delle prestazioni di discriminazione di orientamento neuronale solo negli strati supragranular. Cos&igrave;, la sincronizzazione tra l&#39;attivit&agrave; di singoli neuroni spiking e loro popolazione locale possa aumentare la codificazione sensoriale per ottimizzare l&#39;elaborazione di rete attraverso circuiti laminari.

Una caracter&#xED;stica fundamental del procesamiento de la informaci&#xF3;n en la corteza cerebral es la capacidad de las neuronas individuales para adaptarse a los cambios en los est&#xED;mulos entrantes. Cada vez se entiende que la adaptaci&#xF3;n cortical es un fen&#xF3;meno que requiere la interacci&#xF3;n de la red. El hecho de que la estructura de las redes locales depende cr&#xED;ticamente de la capa cortical aumenta la posibilidad de que la adaptaci&#xF3;n podr&#xED;a inducir efectos espec&#xED;ficos en diferentes capas. Aqu&#xED; nos muestran que la exposici&#xF3;n breve (300 ms) a un est&#xED;mulo de orientaci&#xF3;n fija modula la fuerza de la sincronizaci&#xF3;n entre neuronas individuales y de la actividad de la poblaci&#xF3;n local en la frecuencia de banda gamma (30-80 Hz) en macacos corteza visual primaria (V1) y las influencias la capacidad de las neuronas individuales para codificar la orientaci&#xF3;n est&#xED;mulo. Utilizando sondas laminares, se encontr&#xF3; que aunque la presentaci&#xF3;n del est&#xED;mulo provoca un gran aumento en la sincronizaci&#xF3;n gamma de la actividad neuronal r&#xED;tmica en la entrada (granular), capas de V1, la adaptaci&#xF3;n caus&#xF3; un aumento pronunciado en la sincronizaci&#xF3;n en la salida cortical (supragranulares) capas. El incremento en la sincronizaci&#xF3;n gamma despu&#xE9;s de la adaptaci&#xF3;n se correlacion&#xF3; significativamente con una mejora en el rendimiento de la discriminaci&#xF3;n por orientaci&#xF3;n neuronal s&#xF3;lo en las capas supragranular. Por lo tanto, la sincronizaci&#xF3;n entre la actividad de las neuronas individuales de adici&#xF3;n y de su poblaci&#xF3;n local puede mejorar la codificaci&#xF3;n sensorial para optimizar el procesamiento de red a trav&#xE9;s de circuitos laminares.
