Iden Kurtaliaj is a doctoral candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University. She graduated with honors, distinction and magna cum laude from Drexel University, where she completed the dual BS/MS accelerated degree program in Biomedical Engineering. During her undergraduate studies, she completed three, six-month internships and gained experience in product development. During these internships, she designed, prototyped, and brought to market numerous medical devices, including a spinal implant, for which she is first author of the patent. A desire to merge her passions of engineering, translational research and medical innovation to improve individual and global health, brought her to Columbia University to pursue a MS in Mechanical Engineering. Drawn by the prevalence of poor outcomes after rotator cuff repair and its potential for translational research, she then joined Dr. Thomopoulos Laborotory to pursue a PhD. Her research focuses on innovative solutions to improve fixation of tendon to bone during rotator cuff repair by improving load distribution across the repair site.
