Javier Calvo

Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands (IdISBa)

I’m Dr. Javier Calvo, borned in 1964 in Spain. I’m M.D. and Ph.D., and specialist in Immunology.

During my residency training at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, I participated in several research

projects that led to the publication of more than 20 original articles published in international

journals and obtaining my doctoral thesis that deserved Extraordinary Doctoral Award from

the University of Barcelona. These projects are mainly focused on the study of membrane

CD5 molecule and include its biochemical, genetic and functional characterization. In all the

projects I have been involved conducting essential techniques of cell and molecular biology.

I’m currently working at the Blood and Tissue Bank of the Balearic Islands that was established

in 1999. Since the beginning of the activity of the Tissue Bank in June 1999 I was one of the

responsible for its operation. Currently, within the Tissue Bank are operating Osteotendinous

Tissue Bank (bone, tendons, meniscus), the Bank of Ocular Tissue (cornea, sclera, amniotic

membrane), the Human Milk Bank, a Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine Unit, and the

Balearic Donor Cord Blood Program. It is worth noting my involvement in the implementation

of a laboratory of molecular biology applied to diagnosis analyzing the presence of different

genetic polymorphisms (HLA typing, hereditary hemochromatosis, Factor V Leiden, genetic

rearrangement in leukemias and lymphomas, etc.). Our laboratory was the responsible of

the HLA typing of the bone marrow donor registry in the balearic community in the period

2004-2013.

Recent projects in our lab focus on the preparation and characterization of mesenchymal stem

cells obtained from umbilical cord tissue and the preparation and analysis of demineralized

bone matrix from cortical bone.
