Study of the DNA Damage Checkpoint using Xenopus Egg Extracts
Jeremy Willis *1, Darla DeStephanis *1, Yogin Patel 1, Vrushab Gowda 1, Shan Yan 1
1Department of Biology, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Xenopus egg extract is a useful model system to investigate the DNA damage checkpoint. This protocol is for the preparation of Xenopus egg extracts and DNA damage checkpoint inducing reagents. These techniques are adaptable to a variety of DNA damaging approaches in the study of the DNA damage checkpoint signaling.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Functionalization of Hybrid Au/CdS and Au/ZnS Core/Shell Nanoparticles
Andrew Tobias 1, Song Qing 2, Marcus Jones 1
1Department of Chemistry, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, 2Nanosys Inc.

The synthesis of uniform gold nanoparticles coated with semiconductor shells of CdS or ZnS is performed. The semiconductor coating is conducted by first depositing a silver sulfide shell and exchanging the silver cations for zinc or cadmium cations.

An Analog Macroscopic Technique for Studying Molecular Hydrodynamic Processes in Dense Gases and Liquids
Jerry Dahlberg 1, Peter T. Tkacik 1, Brigid Mullany 1, Eric Fleischhauer 1, Hossein Shahinian 1, Farzad Azimi 1, Jayesh Navare 1, Spencer Owen 1, Tucker Bisel 1, Tony Martin 1, Jodie Sholar 1, Russell G. Keanini 1
1Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

An experimentally accessible analog method for studying molecular hydrodynamic processes in dense fluids is presented. The technique uses particle image velocimetry of vibrated, high-restitution grain piles and allows direct, macroscopic observation of dynamical processes known and predicted to exist in strongly interacting, high density gases and liquids.

Assessing the Expression of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I on Primary Murine Hippocampal Neurons by Flow Cytometry
Kristen E. Funk 1, Sarah K. Lotz 1
1Department of Biological Sciences, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

This protocol describes a method for culturing primary hippocampal neurons from embryonic mouse brain. The expression of major histocompatibility complex class I on the extracellular surface of cultured neurons is then assessed by flow cytometric analysis.
