Falls play a pivotal role in the cause of injury or death and have become a public health problem, especially for older people. Tai Chi may be an effective approach to improving balance and reducing falls. However, the conclusions of systematic reviews (SRs) have been inconsistent and the quality needs to be appraised critically.

Tai Chi for improving balance and reducing falls: An overview of 14 systematic reviews.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common atopic disorders, which seriously affects patients' quality of life. Yupingfeng (YPF) Power is a traditional Chinese herb formula, and its oral dosage form has been widely used for the treatment of AR in Asian countries. In this study, we investigated the effects of YPF nasal drops on ovalbumin (OVA) sensitized/stimulated allergic rhinitis in rats. A Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat model of OVA-induced AR was established and then treated with three doses of YPF nasal drops. Besides, histopathological features, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in the nasal mucosa, and expression of type 1 helper T (Th1)/type 2 helper T (Th2)-related cytokines in serum were analyzed. The results showed that YPF nasal drops alleviated the injury of nasal mucosal epithelial structure, promoted the recovery of ciliary morphology and function and reduced interstitial edema and inflammatory cell infiltration to some extent. Moreover, YPF nasal drops regulated imbalance in Th1/Th2 cells caused by AR via regulating downward the expression of interleukin 4 (IL-4) and adjusting upward the expression of interferon-γ (INF-γ), and interleukin 12 (IL-12). Furthermore, it inhibited the expression of ECP in nasal epithelial eosinophil-specific granules. The findings of this study provided a new perspective for the treatment of AR with YPF nasal drops based on Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Effects of Yupingfeng nasal drops on serum cytokines, histopathology and eosinophil cationic protein in nasal mucosa of rats with allergic rhinitis.

The root and rhizome of  (Danshen in short) is a well-known herbal medicine used to treat cardiovascular diseases in the world. In China, the roots and rhizomes of several other  species (Non-Danshen in short) are also used as this medicine in traditional folk medicine by local herbalists. Differences have been reported in these medicines originating from different sources, and their quality variation needs to be clearly investigated for effective clinical application. This study presented a comprehensive quality evaluation and monitoring for Danshen from 27 sampling sites and Non-Danshen from other 5  species based on a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) and near-infrared (NIR), with the combination of chemometric models. The results showed that cryptotanshinone, tanshinone IIA, tanshinone I, salvianolic acid B, salvianic acid A sodium, dihydrotanshinone I, and rosmarinic acid in these medicines from different sources exhibited great variations. Referring to the standards in Chinese Pharmacopoeia (CP), European Pharmacopeia (EP), and United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Non-Danshen from , and  were assessed as unqualified, and Danshen in the Shandong Province had the best quality due to the high qualified rate. Based on random forest (RF) and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), NIR technique could successfully monitor the quality of these medicines by discriminating the species and regions with the accuracies of 100.00 and 99.60%, respectively. Additionally, modified partial least-squares regression (MPLSR) models were successfully constructed to investigate the feasibility of NIR fingerprints for the prediction of the quality indicators in these medicines. The optimized models obtained the best results for the total of tanshinone IIA, tanshinone I, and cryptotanshinone (TTC), tanshinone IIA, and salvianolic acid B, with the relative prediction deviation () of 4.08, 3.92, and 2.46, respectively. In summary, this study demonstrated that HPLC-DAD and NIR techniques can complement each other and could be simultaneously applied for evaluating and monitoring the quality of Danshen medicines.

Integrative quantitative and qualitative analysis for the quality evaluation and monitoring of Danshen medicines from different sources using HPLC-DAD and NIR combined with chemometrics.

 species are the main source of Rhizoma Coptidis (RC) drugs, which have always been used to treat Alzheimer's disease in the clinical experience of ancient China. However, many species of this genus have been largely underutilized until now. With this fact, this research has been designed to investigate for the first time the anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) property of different extracts for RC drugs from four  species (, ,  and ) and to quantify the main alkaloids. Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions of RC drugs were sequentially collected using an accelerated solvent extraction technique. Spectrum-effect relationship and molecular docking were applied to analyse the relationships between alkaloids and AChE inhibitory activity. The N-butanol extract was proven to be the main active fraction, and  may be the best source of RC drugs for Alzheimer's disease treatment, with significantly lower IC 20, IC 50 and IC 80 values for AChE inhibition. The UPLC/QqQ-MS quantitative analysis showed that the accumulations of 10 alkaloids in RC drugs from different sources greatly varied. Three data processing methods (Random forest, Boruta and Pearson correlation) comprehensively analysed the spectrum-effect relationship and revealed that columbamine, berberine and palmatine were the most important AChE inhibitors that could be used as quality markers to select RC drugs for Alzheimer's disease treatment. In addition, the dominant compounds were successfully docked against AChE to verify the binding affinity and interactions with the active site. The present study can contribute to the reasonable development and utilization of RC drugs from different sources, especially to provide certain evidence for their application in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Characterization of the anti-AChE potential and alkaloids in Rhizoma Coptidis from different  species combined with spectrum-effect relationship and molecular docking.

Initially described as an ancient and highly conserved catabolic biofunction, autophagy plays a significant role in disease pathogenesis and progression. As the bioactive ingredient of , tanshinone has recently shown profound effects in alleviating and treating various diseases by regulating autophagy. However, compared to the remarkable achievements in the known pharmacological effects of this traditional Chinese medicine, there is a lack of a concise and comprehensive review deciphering the mechanism by which tanshinone regulates autophagy for medicinal research. In this context, we concisely review the advances of tanshinone in regulating autophagy for medicinal research, including human cancer, the nervous system, and cardiovascular diseases. The pharmacological effects of tanshinone targeting autophagy involve the regulation of autophagy-related proteins, such as Beclin-1, LC3-II, P62, ULK1, Bax, ATG3, ATG5, ATG7, ATG9, and ATG12; the regulation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR, MEK/ERK/mTOR, Beclin-1-related, and AMPK-related signaling pathways; the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS); and the activation of AMPK. Notably, we found that tanshinone played a dual role in human cancers in an autophagic manner, which may provide a new avenue for potential clinical application. In brief, these findings on autophagic tanshinone and its derivatives provide a new clue for expediting medicinal research related to tanshinone compounds and autophagy.

Genome-wide association study (GWAS) have identified over 1,000 loci associated with blood pressure. However, these loci only explain 6% of heritability. Transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS) combine GWAS summary data with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) to provide a better approach to finding genes associated with complex traits. GWAS summary data (N = 450,584) for essential hypertension originating from European samples were subjected to Post-GWAS analysis using FUMA software and then combined with eQTL data from Genotype-Tissues Expression Project (GTEx) v8 for TWAS analysis using UTMOST, FUSION software, and then validated the results with SMR. FUMA identified 346 significant genes associated with hypertension, FUSION identified 461, and UTMOST cross-tissue analysis identified 34, of which 5 were common. SMR validation identified 3 key genes: ,  and . In previous GWAS studies on blood pressure regulation, the association of  and  with hypertension has been established, and the association between  and blood pressure regulation still needs further validation.
