The expression of anti-predator adaptations may vary on a spatial scale, favouring traits that are advantageous in a given predation regime. Besides, evolution of different developmental strategies depends to a large extent on the grain of the environment and may result in locally canalized adaptations or, alternatively, the evolution of phenotypic plasticity as different predation regimes may vary across habitats. We investigated the potential for predator-driven variability in shell morphology in a freshwater snail, Radix balthica, and whether found differences were a specialized ecotype adaptation or a result of phenotypic plasticity. Shell shape was quantified in snails from geographically separated pond populations with and without molluscivorous fish. Subsequently, in a common garden experiment we investigated reaction norms of snails from populations' with/without fish when exposed to chemical cues from tench (Tinca tinca), a molluscivorous fish. We found that snails from fish-free ponds had a narrow shell with a well developed spire, whereas snails that coexisted with fish had more rotund shells with a low spire, a shell morphology known to increase survival rate from shell-crushing predators. The common garden experiment mirrored the results from the field survey and showed that snails had similar reaction norms in response to chemical predator cues, i.e. the expression of shell shape was independent of population origin. Finally, we found significant differences for the trait means among populations, within each pond category (fish/fish free), suggesting a genetic component in the determination of shell morphology that has evolved independently across ponds.

Nous avons &eacute;tudi&eacute; le potentiel de la variabilit&eacute; dans la morphologie de la coquille chez un escargot d&#39;eau douce, Radix balthica, pilot&eacute;e par le pr&eacute;dateur et si les diff&eacute;rences trouv&eacute;es &eacute;taient une adaptation de l&#39;&eacute;cotype sp&eacute;cialis&eacute; ou un r&eacute;sultat de la plasticit&eacute; ph&eacute;notypique. Coquille de forme a &eacute;t&eacute; quantifi&eacute; dans les escargots provenant de populations g&eacute;ographiquement s&eacute;par&eacute;es d&#39;&eacute;tang avec et sans poissons importantes. Par la suite, dans une exp&eacute;rience de jardin commun, nous avons &eacute;tudi&eacute; les normes de r&eacute;action d&#39;escargots provenant de populations avec/sans poissons lorsqu&#39;ils sont expos&eacute;s &agrave; des signaux chimiques de la tanche (Tinca tinca), un poisson importantes. Nous avons constat&eacute; que les escargots des &eacute;tangs sans poissons avaient une coquille &eacute;troite d&#39;une fl&egrave;che bien d&eacute;velopp&eacute;e, tandis que les escargots qui ont coexist&eacute; avec les poissons avaient des coquilles plus rond avec un peu de la fl&egrave;che, une morphologie de la coquille connue pour augmenter le taux de survie des pr&eacute;dateurs coquille d&#39;&eacute;crasement. L&#39;exp&eacute;rience de jardin commun refl&egrave;te les r&eacute;sultats de l&#39;enqu&ecirc;te sur le terrain et a montr&eacute; que les escargots avaient des normes analogues de r&eacute;action en r&eacute;ponse &agrave; des signaux chimiques predator, c&#39;est-&agrave;-dire l&#39;expression de la forme de la coquille &eacute;tait ind&eacute;pendante de l&#39;origine de la population. Enfin, nous avons trouv&eacute; des diff&eacute;rences significatives pour les moyens de caract&egrave;re entre les populations, au sein de chaque cat&eacute;gorie d&#39;&eacute;tang (poisson/poisson gratuitement), ce qui sugg&egrave;re une composante g&eacute;n&eacute;tique dans la d&eacute;termination de la morphologie de la coquille qui a &eacute;volu&eacute; de fa&ccedil;on ind&eacute;pendante &agrave; travers des &eacute;tangs.

Au&szlig;erdem Entwicklung verschiedener Entwicklungs-Strategien das Korn der Umwelt in hohem Ma&szlig;e abh&auml;ngig und kann im lokal kanalisierten Anpassungen oder, alternativ, die Entwicklung der ph&auml;notypischen Plastizit&auml;t f&uuml;hren, da verschiedene Pr&auml;dation Regime Lebensr&auml;ume variieren k&ouml;nnen. Wir festgestellt, dass Schnecken aus Fisch-freie Teiche eine schmale Schale mit einer gut entwickelten Turm hatte, w&auml;hrend die Schnecken, die mit Fisch koexistierten mehr Bille Schalen mit einem niedrigen hatte Kirchturm, eine Schale Morphologie bekannt, dass die &Uuml;berlebensrate von Shell-Brech Raubtiere zu erh&ouml;hen. Das gemeinsame Garten Experiment spiegelt die Ergebnisse der Feldarbeit und zeigte, dass Schnecken hatte &auml;hnliche Reaktion Normen als Reaktion auf chemische Raubtier-Signale, d.h. Abbiamo studiato il potenziale predatore-driven variabilit&agrave; nella morfologia del guscio di una lumaca d&#39;acqua dolce, Radix balthica, e se trovate le differenze erano un adattamento ecotipo specializzato o un risultato di plasticit&agrave; fenotipica. Forma di conchiglia &egrave; stata quantificata in lumache da popolazioni geograficamente separate stagno con e senza molluscivorous pesce. Successivamente, in un esperimento di giardino comune abbiamo studiato le norme di reazione di lumache da popolazioni con/senza pesce quando esposti a segnali chimici da tinca (Tinca tinca), un pesce molluscivorous. Abbiamo trovato che lumache da stagni privo di pesce avevano un guscio stretto con una guglia ben sviluppato, mentre lumache che coesistevano con pesce avevano pi&ugrave; paffuti conchiglie con una bassa spire, una morfologia shell nota per aumentare il tasso di sopravvivenza dai predatori shell-schiacciamento. L&#39;esperimento di giardino comune rispecchia i risultati dell&#39;indagine di campo e ha mostrato che lumache avevano simili norme di reazione in risposta a segnali chimici predatore, cio&egrave; l&#39;espressione di forma di conchiglia era indipendente dall&#39;origine della popolazione. Infine, abbiamo trovato differenze significative per i mezzi di tratto tra popolazioni, all&#39;interno di ciascuna categoria di stagno (pesce/pesce libero), suggerendo una componente genetica nella determinazione della morfologia di shell che si &egrave; evoluta indipendentemente in stagni.

Adem&aacute;s, evoluci&oacute;n de diferentes estrategias de desarrollo depende en gran parte el grano del medio ambiente y puede resultar en adaptaciones localmente canalizadas o, alternativamente, la evoluci&oacute;n de la plasticidad fenot&iacute;pica como reg&iacute;menes diferentes de depredaci&oacute;n pueden variar a trav&eacute;s de h&aacute;bitats. Encontr&oacute; que los caracoles de estanques de peces-libre ten&iacute;an una estrecha c&aacute;scara con una aguja bien desarrollada, mientras que caracoles que coexistieron con pescado ten&iacute;an m&aacute;s rotundos c&aacute;scaras con una baja de spire, una morfolog&iacute;a de concha conocida para aumentar la tasa de supervivencia de los depredadores de trituraci&oacute;n de shell. El experimento de jard&iacute;n com&uacute;n refleja los resultados de la encuesta de campo y demostr&oacute; que caracoles ten&iacute;an normas similares de la reacci&oacute;n en respuesta a se&ntilde;ales qu&iacute;micas depredador, es decir, la expresi&oacute;n de la forma de la c&aacute;scara era independiente del origen de la poblaci&oacute;n. In addition to having constitutive defence traits, many organisms also respond to predation by phenotypic plasticity. In order for plasticity to be adaptive, induced defences should incur a benefit to the organism in, for example, decreased risk of predation. However, the production of defence traits may include costs in fitness components such as growth, time to reproduction, or fecundity. To test the hypothesis that the expression of phenotypic plasticity incurs costs, we performed a common garden experiment with a freshwater snail, Radix balthica, a species known to change morphology in the presence of molluscivorous fish. We measured a number of predator-induced morphological and behavioural defence traits in snails that we reared in the presence or absence of chemical cues from fish. Further, we quantified the costs of plasticity in fitness characters related to fecundity and growth. Since plastic responses may be inhibited under limited resource conditions, we reared snails in different densities and thereby levels of competition. Snails exposed to predator cues grew rounder and thicker shells, traits confirmed to be adaptive in environments with fish. Defence traits were consistently expressed independent of density, suggesting strong selection from predatory molluscivorous fish. However, the expression of defence traits resulted in reduced growth rate and fecundity, particularly with limited resources. Our results suggest full defence in predator related traits regardless of resource availability, and costs of defence consequently paid in traits related to fitness.

Jedoch kann die Produktion von Verteidigung Z&uuml;ge Kosten beinhalten, in Fitness-Komponenten wie Wachstum, Zeit, Vervielf&auml;ltigung oder Fruchtbarkeit. Oltre ad avere tratti costitutivi della difesa, molti organismi anche rispondono alla predazione di plasticit&agrave; fenotipica.
