Two atmospheric circulation systems, the mid-latitude Westerlies and the Asian summer monsoon (ASM), play key roles in northern-hemisphere climatic changes. However, the variability of the Westerlies in Asia and their relationship to the ASM remain unclear. Here, we present the longest and highest-resolution drill core from Lake Qinghai on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), which uniquely records the variability of both the Westerlies and the ASM since 32 ka, reflecting the interplay of these two systems. These records document the anti-phase relationship of the Westerlies and the ASM for both glacial-interglacial and glacial millennial timescales. During the last glaciation, the influence of the Westerlies dominated; prominent dust-rich intervals, correlated with Heinrich events, reflect intensified Westerlies linked to northern high-latitude climate. During the Holocene, the dominant ASM circulation, punctuated by weak events, indicates linkages of the ASM to orbital forcing, North Atlantic abrupt events, and perhaps solar activity changes.

Pituitary adenoma (PA) is one of the most common intracranial neoplasms. Several genetic predisposing factors for PA have been identified, but they account for a small portion of cases. In this study, we sought to identify the PA genetic risk factors by focusing on causative mutations for PAs. Among the 4 affected and 17 asymptomatic members from one family with familial PA, whole-exome sequencing identified cosegregation of the PA phenotype with the heterozygous missense mutation c.4136G>T (p.Arg1379Leu) in cadherin-related 23 (CDH23). This mutation causes an amino acid substitution in the calcium-binding motif of the extracellular cadherin (EC) domains of CDH23 and is predicted to impair cell-cell adhesion. Genomic screening in a total of 12 families with familial PA (20 individuals), 125 individuals with sporadic PA, and 260 control individuals showed that 33% of the families with familial PA (4/12) and 12% of individuals with sporadic PA (15/125) harbored functional CDH23 variants. In contrast, 0.8% of the healthy control individuals (2/260) carried functional CDH23 variants. Gene-based analysis also revealed a significant association between CDH23 genotype and PA (p = 5.54 × 10-7). Moreover, PA individuals who did not harbor functional CDH23 variants displayed tumors that were larger in size (p = 0.005) and more invasive (p < 0.001). Therefore, mutations in CDH23 are linked with familial and sporadic PA and could play important roles in the pathogenesis of PA.

Germline Mutations in CDH23, Encoding Cadherin-Related 23, Are Associated with Both Familial and Sporadic Pituitary Adenomas.

The tribological performances of the SiO₂/MoS₂ hybrids as lubricant additives were explored by a reciprocating ball-on-flat tribometer for AZ31 magnesium alloy/AISI 52100 bearing steel pairs. The results demonstrated that the introduction of SiO₂/MoS₂ hybrids into the base oil exhibited a significant reduction in the friction coefficient and wear volume as well as an increase in load bearing capacity, which was better than the testing results of the SiO₂ or MoS₂ nanolubricants. Specifically, the addition of 0.1 wt % nano-SiO₂ mixed with 1.0 wt % nano-MoS₂ into the base oil reduced the friction coefficient by 21.8% and the wear volume by 8.6% compared to the 1.0 wt % MoS₂ nanolubricants. The excellent lubrication behaviors of the SiO₂/MoS₂ hybrid nanolubricants can be explained by the micro-cooperation of different nanoparticles with disparate morphology and lubrication mechanisms.

Synergistic Effect of MoS₂ and SiO₂ Nanoparticles as Lubricant Additives for Magnesium Alloy-Steel Contacts.

The current study is to observe the effect of the locking system strengthened by biomimetic mineralized collagen putty for the treatment of senile proximal humeral osteoporotic fractures. From January 2012 to December 2015, 80 cases of senile patients with osteoporotic proximal humeral fractures were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, each group with a total of 40 cases. The control group was simply treated with locking plate. The observation group was treated with locking plate in combination with biomimetic mineralized collagen putty. The therapeutic effect thereby was observed. The excellent and satisfactory rate was 90% in observation group and was 72.5% in control group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (χ2 = 5.3312, P < 0.05). The fracture healing time was 11.82 ± 3.62 weeks in observation group and 19.78 ± 5.46 weeks in control group. The shoulder joint function score was 89.63 ± 8.12 in observation group and 76.92 ± 8.18 in control group. There was significant difference between the two groups (t = 7.1272; 12.7834, P < 0.05). The complication rate was 10% in the observation group and 32.5% in the control group (χ2 = 7.3786, P < 0.05). Locking system strengthened by biomimetic mineralized collagen putty has advantages such as accelerating healing of senile proximal humeral fracture, improving the therapeutic effect, reducing the complications. As one of the optimal internal fixation method, it provides a new option for better treatment of senile osteoporotic fracture.
