DNA stabilen Isotopen (DNA-SIP) ist ein leistungsfähiges Verfahren zur Identifizierung von aktiven Mikroorganismen, insbesondere Kohlenstoff-Substraten und Nährstoffe in zelluläre Biomasse zu assimilieren. Als solcher hat dieser Anbau-unabhängige Technik eine wichtige Methodik für die Vergabe metabolische Funktion, um die verschiedenen Gemeinschaften bewohnen eine Vielzahl von terrestrischen und aquatischen Umgebungen. Nach der Inkubation eines Umwelt-Probe mit stabilen Isotopen markierten Verbindungen, extrahiert Nukleinsäure Dichtegradienten-Ultrazentrifugation und die anschließende Steigung Fraktionierung unterzogen, um Nukleinsäuren unterschiedlicher Dichte zu trennen. Reinigung von DNA aus Cäsiumchlorid ruft beschriftet und unbeschriftet DNA für die anschließende molekulare Charakterisierung (z. B. Fingerabdrücke, Microarrays, Klon-Bibliotheken, Metagenomik).
