Parásitos protozoarios se encuentran entre los agentes infecciosos más devastadores de los seres humanos responsables de una variedad de enfermedades, incluyendo la amibiasis, la cual es una de las tres causas más comunes de muerte por enfermedades parasitarias. El agente de la amibiasis es la ameba Entamoeba histolytica parásito que existe en dos etapas: el quiste infeccioso en los alimentos o el agua y la vida trofozoíto invasivo en el intestino. Las manifestaciones clínicas de la amebiasis de ser asintomática hasta abscesos colitis, disentería o el hígado.
