1. 供給ガス供給と制御雰囲気
<ol><li>TPFEまたは同様のプラスチックチューブ24を避け、全金属ガスラインからなるガス供給を設定します。ガス供給ラインをできるだけ短くして不純物を避け、ガス供給システムのポンプを促進します。</li>
	<li>COST-Jetの一般的なガス流量に応じて、供給ガスを供給するために使用するマスフローコントローラを選択します。純度99.999%以上の作動ガスを使用してください。 注:COST-Jetの主要な作業ガスはヘリウムです。動作は100 sccmから約5000 sccmの間の流速で実現でき、1000 sccmが最も一般的な値です。</li>
	<li>複数のマスフローコントローラからなるシステムで反応ガスの混合を実現します。より小さな混和剤の場合、カウンターミキシングユニットを使用して、混合が25を完了するのに必要な時間を短縮します。 注:一般的な混和剤は、5 sccm(作動ガスの0.5%)の順序で流量を持つ酸素と窒素です。</li>
	<li>ガス供給ラインとジェット機の間にバルブを追加して、水が使用されていないときに湿った空気がガス供給に入るのを防ぎ、大気圧プラズマの中で最も一般的で最も問題のある不純物であり、プラズマ化学に重大な影響を与えます。</li>

	<li>分子ふるいトラップまたはコールドトラップ(例えば、液体窒素を使用して)をガス供給ラインに加え、供給ガスの湿度をさらに低減します。</li>
	<li>代わりに、制御された量の水が試薬として望まれる場合は、バブラーをシステム26,27に加える。</li>
	<li>周囲の大気の組成の変化がプラズマ排水中の化学反応に影響を与える可能性があるため、実験のために制御された雰囲気を設定することを検討してください。 注:この効果は、放電チャネルの内部にプラズマを閉じ込めるが、アクティブなプラズマが部分的にデバイスの外にある他のCAPデバイスにとって重要な役割を果たす可能性があるため、COST-Jet28ではあまり顕著ではない可能性があります。</li>
</ol>2. デバイスの組み立てとセットアップ
<ol><li>COST-Jet デバイスをガス供給に接続します。デバイスを1/4インチのステンレス鋼スウェージロックチューブに直接接続します。異なるチューブ規格にアダプタを使用します。</li>
	<li>SMCコネクタを装備したシールドBNCケーブルを使用して、COST-Jetを電源に接続します。</li>

	<li>COST-Jetデバイスでプラズマに点火する:まず、マスフローコントローラ(MFC)を使用してヘリウムの約1 slpmのガス流量を設定します。ガス供給システムとCOST-Jet最後の間のバルブを開きます。次に、低電圧を電極に適用し、プラズマが点火するまで振幅を大きくします。</li>
	<li>最初の点火時に電極が汚れ、点火を妨げている場合は、高い初期電圧を印加し、点火後に速やかに減らします。または、より簡単な最初の点火を容易にするためにスパークガンを使用してください。</li>
	<li>動作制御パラメータ(ガス流、印加電圧)を希望の値に設定します。</li>

</ol>3. 電力測定
<ol><li>COST-Jetに適用される電圧と電流を監視するオシロスコープをコンピュータに接続します。</li>
	<li>リアルタイムの電力監視11、19を可能にするコンピュータ29に「COSTパワーモニタ」ソフトウェアをインストールします。</li>
	<li>特定のオシロスコープを制御するために必要なコマンドを実装することにより、ソフトウェアとオシロスコープ間の通信を調整します。</li>
	<li>COST 電源モニタソフトウェアを起動し 、[設定] パネルに切り替えます。オシロスコープに接続された正しいチャンネルと、ステップ2.4で決定したキャリブレーション定数を入力します。 メモ: 商用電圧プローブが COST-Jet に接続されている場合は、[ 検索 ]ボタンを使用して、キャリブレーション係数を自動的に計算できます。</li>

	<li>[開始]ボタンと[一時停止]ボタンを押して、電気計測を開始または一時停止します。</li>
	<li>必要に応じて、COST-Jetを操作します。電圧と電流の振幅から計算された実際の電力と、その位相シフトを使用して、ソフトウェアに継続的に表示して監視し、制御パラメータとして使用します。</li>
</ol>4. (固体)表面処理
<ol><li>実験のために制御された雰囲気を設定します。 注:COST-Jetの場合、制御された大気は、限られた排出チャネルの外でアクティブなプラズマ化学を持つソースよりも重要ではありません。</li>
	<li>ステップ 1.5 で説明したように、ガス供給ラインを清掃します。</li>
	<li>必要な動作パラメータを設定し、COST-jetが安定した温度になるまで約20分待ちます。</li>

</ol>5. 液体処理

	<li>中性ガス流と液体表面との摩擦による液体の混合/攪拌を考慮に入れて、液体中の輸送プロセスと濃度プロファイルに影響を与えます。さらに、処理時間に応じて、処理中の液体の蒸発(例えば、反応定数を計算する場合)に対して修正する。プラズマ源によっては、この蒸発が放電に戻ってカップリングを引き起こし、プラズマ化学を変化させる可能性があることに注意してください。</li>
	<li>また、液体中の試薬との反応性もこの薬剤の表面活性の影響を受ける点も考慮してください。したがって、いくつかのケースでは、界面活性剤は、短命の種と液体の間の相互作用に重要な役割を果たす可能性があります。</li>
</ol>

著者らは開示するものは何もない。

ここでは、異なる材料の表面処理に大気圧プラズマジェットを用いるための実験を行う。大気圧プラズマジェットの実験設定は、プラズマパラメータ、化学、性能に大きな影響を与え、その結果、プラズマ処理の結果に影響を与え、プロトコルの重要なステップです。
例として、ガス供給ラインは、湿度であるプラズマの供給ガス中で最も一般的な不純物に関して重要な役割を果たす。特に、血漿中の反応性窒素種の生産は、活性酸素種の生産が好まれる間に減少し、水分子や窒素35と比較して酸素のイオン化エネルギーが低いためである。Winter24 は、内管の表面の水分子に由来する供給ガス湿度が、気孔率と貯蔵能力が高いため、金属管と比較してポリマーチューブを使用して桁違いに高いことを発見した。フィードガスでラインを洗い流すことで低減できます。しかし、フラッシュによってラインを乾燥させるには数時間かかります。したがって、ポリマーチューブは、できるだけ避けるか、少なくとも短く保つ必要があります。これらの知見は、Große-Kreul25の研究によって下線が引かれている。彼らは、質量分析を用いて、プラズマ化学に対するポリアミドおよびステンレス鋼チューブの効果を比較した。彼らの測定は、ポリマーチューブからの水の噴気および金属管によるより速い乾燥時間によるプラズマ中の水クラスターイオン形成を確認する。さらに、分子篩トラップや液体窒素コールドトラップなどのガス浄化法がプラズマ化学に及ぼす影響を調査し、不純物の量を約2桁削減しました。
供給ガスを浄化しようとする代わりに、制御された量の湿度を加えるアプローチもあります。この意図的な不純物は自然な不純物を支配し、プラズマ化学を制御するので、加湿量が正確に知られている限り再現可能な条件が保証されます。
放電の点火のために、電極への印加電圧は、通常、単に故障のポイントまで増加させることができる。しかし、電極の表面条件によっては、高電圧が必要な場合がある。点火を容易にするために、高圧スパークガンを使用することができます。これは、COST-Jetでアルゴン放電を点火しようとするときにも役立ちます。
COST-Jet をサーフェスに適用する前に、デバイスが平衡化するのに十分な時間を割り当てる必要があります。目的の制御パラメータに設定すると、COST-Jetは安定した条件11に到達するために約20分を必要とします。この間、装置の温度、ガス温度、プラズマ化学は定常状態に達している。
科学的な結果の比較のためには、同等の血漿制御パラメータが必要である。電力入力電力を測定するために、COSTパワーモニタは29を使用することができます。ソフトウェアはオープンソースであり、オシロスコープの異なるタイプの範囲と互換性があります。ソフトウェアは、Golda19によって記述された原則に従って動作します。
供給ガスの湿度がプラズマ化学に及ぼす影響に加えて、プラズマから基質への反応性種の輸送は、廃液組成において重要な役割を果たし、プロトコルのもう一つの重要なステップである。周囲の大気は、基板に向かう途中でプラズマ中に作られた種に影響を与える可能性があります。この影響を最小限に抑えるために、2つの異なる概念が使用されます:(i)まず、供給ガスで構成される制御された雰囲気を設定することができます。これにより、周囲の大気の組成を一定に保つことができる。治療に必要な純度レベルに応じて、制御された雰囲気は、過圧を防ぐために一方向バルブを装備した保護ハウジングを介して実現することができます。より高い純度レベルのために、ポンプが付いている真空の部屋は使用することができる。(ii) 第二に、プラズマ排水36,37の周囲に遮蔽ガスカーテンを使用することで制御された雰囲気を作り出すことができる。通常、それは不活性ガスからなるが、用途のニーズに応じて変化させることもできます。
幸いなことに、COST-Jetの場合、周囲の大気の影響は比較的低いです。同位体標識を用いて、ゴルバネフは、パラレルフィールド構成プラズマジェットの場合、液体表面に到達する活性酸素および窒素種がプラズマガス相ならびにプラズマノズルとサンプル38,39との間の領域に形成されたことを示した。対照的に、COST-Jetに同じ技術を用いて、RONSは周囲の環境28の代わりにプラズマ相に由来することがわかりました。これは、おそらく、電界がCOST-Jet放電のプラズマチャネルに限定されているためです。これは、プラズマ放電は、その環境からほとんど独立し、それに特定のリモート文字を与えます。
縦電界プラズマジェットの場合、Darnyら40 は、電界の極性がガス流パターンを変え、したがってイオン風による目標に到達する反応性の種にも変えることを示している。環境への反応性種密度の依存性は、スタンカムピアノら7による測定によって確認された。彼らは、電気特性に応じて処理水で作られた反応性種の数の違いを報告した。これらの違いを補うために、彼らは補償電気回路を作成しなければならなかった。この動作は COST-Jet では異なります: 図 5 では 、2 つの異なるガス流量に対して、電圧を加えずに、運用中に COST-Jet のシュリーレン画像を比較します。画像は、Kelly41で説明されているように、単一のミラーインラインアライメントを使用して撮影されました。彼らは、水平に整列したCOST-Jet排水が平らなガラス基板にどのように当たるかを示しています。両方の画像は、まったく同じガスフローパターンを示しています。これは、プラズマ排水中に荷電種がないことによるイオン風の欠如から生じる。
さらに、COST-Jetは非常に層状の流れパターンを示す。Kelly41 は、さまざまなガス流量に関して 図5に示したものと同様のシュリーレン画像を示した。2 slpmの比較的高いガス流量であっても、プラズマ排水は乱気流の兆候を示さない。0.25 slpm以下の非常に低いガス流量で、ヘリウム廃水の浮力が役割を果たし始める。しかし、ノズルから最大4〜5mmの距離で、周囲の雰囲気は、質量分析17を使用してEllerwegによって示されるように、表面に到達するガス組成に影響を与えません。
上記の特性はすべて、COST-Jetのリモート文字に追加されます。これは、表面の制御された、同等の処理のための理想的な候補になります。

処理されたサンプルに対する所望の効果に応じて、制御パラメータガス流れの混合物、印加された電力、およびプラズマ源と表面間の距離を適宜調整することができる。COST-Jetの場合、排水中の反応性種を調査する研究の広範な文献データベースが存在する。一例として、ウィレムス30 は質量分析を用いて原子酸素密度を測定し、シュナイダー42 は廃液中の原子窒素密度を測定した。
大気圧プラズマによる液体の処理は、反応性の種、イオン、光子、電界などによって駆動される様々な反応機構を引き起こす可能性があります。COST-Jetの前述の特性により、プラズマが液体に直接接触しているプラズマ源に比べて、電界、イオン、光子の効果はごくわずかです。そこで、ヘフニー43 およびベネディクト44によってCOST-jetを用いたフェノール溶液に対する原子酸素のような短命反応性種の効果を研究する。さらに、COST-Jetは、液体処理28の実験と数値シミュレーションを比較する便利な可能性を提供する。プラズマと液体の相互作用は、プラズマから液体表面への反応性種のガス流によって支配され、モデルの複雑さを軽減することができます。
液体のガス流誘導攪拌は、プラズマ発生した反応性種と液体との反応速度を増加させる。固体の表面処理とは対照的に、液体の対流は常に反応物の局所的な濃度を変化させる。さらに、液体中の反応物を含むプラズマ発生種間の反応速度も、これらの反応物の表面活性の影響を受ける。表面活性の増加に伴い、液体表面での反応物の濃度が増加する。これらの界面活性剤は、プラズマによって生成される短命種の反応性において重要な役割を果たす可能性がある。
液体表面に衝突する気体流を攪拌する次に、考慮しなければならない蒸発も誘発する。COST-Jetを短い処理時間で使用すると、蒸発は軽微な役割を果たす可能性がありますが、正しい反応率を計算するために考慮する必要があります。COST-Jetの放電は蒸発の影響を受けないため、プラズマ化学も影響を受けません。プラズマが液体に直接接触しているプラズマ源は、天とクシュナー45 が誘電性バリア放電のために示すように、プラズマ化学は蒸発によって大きく変化しています。また、kINPenについて、蒸発の効果を46と判定した。
異なるプラズマ源について考慮する必要があるプラズマ化学のこれらの言及の違いに加えて、また、液体表面変化の気体流によって誘発される半月板のトポロジー。この半月板の深さは、通常、ガス速度に依存します。電極構成が液体に到達する重要な電界を誘導するプラズマ源、あるいは液体に接触するプラズマを有するプラズマの場合、このメニスカスは47,48を上昇させることができる。図示のように、使用されるプラズマ源に従っていくつかの効果を考慮する必要があります。
今後、このプロトコルを使用して、COST-Jetを使用して表面および液体の処理を行い、記述することができます。それは、異なるプラズマジェット設計の多くの中でユニークなリモートキャラクターを示す安定した、再現可能なプラズマ源です。同じ方法は、COST-Jet源のみに限定されず、任意の冷気圧プラズマ源で使用するように変更および適合させることができます。

冷気圧プラズマ(CAPs)は近年、表面処理用途の可能性から関心が高まっています。CAPは非平衡特性を特徴とし、処理されたサンプルへの熱的影響を低く保ちながら、反応種の高密度を有する複雑なプラズマ化学を可能にする。したがって、CAPは、生体組織1、2、3、4の治療のために特に考慮される。CAPsの多くの概念と設計は、他の生物医学的用途の中で、創傷消毒および治癒、血液凝固、および癌治療にうまく使用されています。生体組織の大部分は液体を含む。そのため、細胞媒体や水5、6、7などの液体表面に対するRAPの影響の調査にもますます焦点が当てられます。
しかし、科学的な結果は、多くの場合、信頼性と再現性の問題8、9、10に苦しんでいます。一方で、処理された生物学的基質は自然な変動の影響を受ける。一方、生物のメカニズムは、プラズマプロセス(電界、紫外線、長命・短命の種など)に直接起因することはほとんどありませんでした。さらに、これらのプラズマプロセスは、個々のプラズマ源とその用途の正確な種類に大きく依存します。
さらに、治療手順の詳細なプロトコルはほとんど利用できません。これにより、特定のプラズマパラメータが治療結果に及ぼす影響を分離することが困難になり、得られた結果は転写不可能になります。
そこで最近では、冷気圧プラズマを用いて表面、組織、液体の処理を標準化する様々な試みがなされている。ここでは、選択した例だけを紹介します。
<ol><li>異なるプラズマ源の直接比較を簡単にするために、基準源が開発されました。低圧プラズマコミュニティに触発され、将来の生物医学研究11の基準源となり得るCOSTアクションMP1101の枠組みの中で再現可能で安定した放電設計(COST-Jet)が開発された。</li>
	<li>比較を可能にするために、個々のアプリケーションのリファレンスプロトコルが開発されました。冷気圧プラズマの抗菌特性の比較を標準化するために、例えば、Mannら.は、面積単位12当たりの処理時間を正規化して微生物処理のための基準プロトコルを定義した。</li>
	<li>より柔軟なアプローチのために、Kogelheideら.は、高分子13に対するプラズマ誘導化学修飾を調査する方法を開発した。システインやシステイン含有グルタチオン(GSH)などのトレーサー化合物をFTIRおよび質量分析と組み合わせて使用し、生物学的基質上の化学修飾を推定しようとした。この方法を用いて、COST-Jet、kinPen、およびCinogy DBDなどのいくつかのプラズマ源は、すでに14、15、16と比較されています。</li>
	<li>個々のプラズマ源を直接比較するには、同等の制御パラメータを確立する必要があります。電子温度、電子密度、反応性の流束密度などの基本的なプラズマパラメータは、大気圧プラズマでは一過性であり、その大きさが小さいことが多いため、測定が困難です。その代わり、特にシミュレーション17,18と結果を比較する場合は、発電機の電源、印加電圧または点火、アーク点などの外部制御パラメータが参照として使用されます。さらに最近では、測定された電気エネルギー消費量は、より信頼性の高い制御パラメータ19、20、21として使用されている。</li>
</ol>これらの努力にもかかわらず、異なる研究の結果を比較することは、単にプラズマ源を表面に正しく適用するという課題のために、まだ不可能かもしれません。外部電界(補償回路)の影響、プラズマと周囲の環境(シールド大気)、種輸送(イオン風)、制御パラメータ(電圧、電流、電力)の影響など、大気圧プラズマアプリケーションを操作する際に取り組む必要がある膨大な数の落とし穴があります。
この作業の主な目的は、表面処理のためのCOST-Jetのアプリケーションに関する徹底した、詳細なプロトコルを提供することです。COST-Jetは、工業用や医療用ではなく、科学的な参考用に開発された信頼性の高いプラズマ源です。それは再生可能な排出条件および利用可能な研究22、23の広範なデータベースを提供する。COST-Jetは均質で容量的に結合されたRFプラズマに基づいている。電界はガス流に対して垂直に閉じ込められているため、荷電種はほとんど排出領域に保管され、ターゲットや周囲の大気と相互作用しません。さらに、層ガスの流れは血漿廃水の再生可能な血漿化学条件を保障する。
本稿では、最も一般的な課題に取り組み、文献で使用されている可能性のある解決策を紹介する。これらは、適切なガス供給、排出制御、周囲の雰囲気の影響、および表面調製が含まれます。ここで示すプロトコルに準拠して、測定の再現性と比較可能性を確保する必要があります。
このプロトコルは、他の大気圧源の例としても機能する場合があります。個々のガスの流れと電界構成に従って他のジェットプラズマ源のために精製されなければならない。該当する場合は、プロトコルに対する可能な調整を指摘します。説明されたステップは、大気圧プラズマを処理されたサンプルに適用する研究を発表する際に考慮され、報告されるべきである。

図3 は、イメージング分光反射率31を用いて測定した0.5%の酸素を混合した1.4 slpmヘリウムのガス流を用いて、COST-Jetで3分間処理するためのa:C-Hフィルムのエッチングプロファイルを示す。このエッチングパターンは、プラズマ廃液の円筒対称性を表す円形構造を示す。数値シミュレーションと組み合わせたエッチングプロファイルに基づいて、原子酸素の表面損失確率を推定することができました。

図4 は、液体表面に衝突する気流によって生じる液体中の渦を示す。液体中のトレーサー粒子を照らしたレーザーシートを用いて、粒子画像のベロシメトリーを介してこれらの粒子の軌跡と速度を観察し、したがって流体流量32を研究することができる。粒子の軌跡が流体の動きを表すため、播種粒子と流体の密度を同様に考慮することが重要です。流体の流れの測定と数値シミュレーションのこの視覚化を用いて、33を比較することができる。渦は、排水ガスの流れと液体表面との間の表面摩擦によるものです。 図4 はまた、プラズマジェットの気流下の液面の下に生じるうつ病、いわゆるメニスカスを示す。青い線で視覚化されます。

Synthesis and Microdiffraction at Extreme Pressures and Temperatures

High pressure compounds and polymorphs are investigated for a broad range of purposes such as determine structures and processes of deep planetary interiors, design materials with novel properties, understand the mechanical behavior of materials exposed to very high stresses as in explosions or impacts. Synthesis and structural analysis of materials at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature entails remarkable technical challenges. In the laser heated diamond anvil cell (LH-DAC), very high pressure is generated between the tips of two opposing diamond anvils forced against each other; focused infrared laser beams, shined through the diamonds, allow to reach very high temperatures on samples absorbing the laser radiation. When the LH-DAC is installed in a synchrotron beamline that provides extremely brilliant x-ray radiation, the structure of materials under extreme conditions can be probed in situ. LH-DAC samples, although very small, can show highly variable grain size, phase and chemical composition. In order to obtain the high resolution structural analysis and the most comprehensive characterization of a sample, we collect diffraction data in 2D grids and combine powder, single crystal and multigrain diffraction techniques. Representative results obtained in the synthesis of a new iron oxide, Fe4O5 1 will be shown.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Monolayer Contact Doping of Silicon Surfaces and Nanowires Using Organophosphorus Compounds

Monolayer Contact Doping (MLCD) is a simple method for doping of surfaces and nanostructures1. MLCD results in the formation of highly controlled, ultra shallow and sharp doping profiles at the nanometer scale. In MLCD process the dopant source is a monolayer containing dopant atoms.
In this article a detailed procedure for surface doping of silicon substrate as well as silicon nanowires is demonstrated. Phosphorus dopant source was formed using tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate monolayer on a silicon substrate. This monolayer containing substrate was brought to contact with a pristine intrinsic silicon target substrate and annealed while in contact. Sheet resistance of the target substrate was measured using 4 point probe. Intrinsic silicon nanowires were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process using a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism; gold nanoparticles were used as catalyst for nanowire growth. The nanowires were suspended in ethanol by mild sonication. This suspension was used to dropcast the nanowires on silicon substrate with a silicon nitride dielectric top layer. These nanowires were doped with phosphorus in similar manner as used for the intrinsic silicon wafer. Standard photolithography process was used to fabricate metal electrodes for the formation of nanowire based field effect transistor (NW-FET). The electrical properties of a representative nanowire device were measured by a semiconductor device analyzer and a probe station.

A detailed procedure for surface doping of Silicon interfaces is provided. The ultra-shallow surface doping is demonstrated by using phosphorus containing monolayers and rapid annealing process. The method can be used for doping of macroscopic area surfaces as well as nanostructures.

How to Ignite an Atmospheric Pressure Microwave Plasma Torch without Any Additional Igniters

This movie shows how an atmospheric pressure plasma torch can be ignited by microwave power with no additional igniters. After ignition of the plasma, a stable and continuous operation of the plasma is possible and the plasma torch can be used for many different applications. On one hand, the hot (3,600 K gas temperature) plasma can be used for chemical processes and on the other hand the cold afterglow (temperatures down to almost RT) can be applied for surface processes. For example chemical syntheses are interesting volume processes. Here the microwave plasma torch can be used for the decomposition of waste gases which are harmful and contribute to the global warming but are needed as etching gases in growing industry sectors like the semiconductor branch. Another application is the dissociation of CO2. Surplus electrical energy from renewable energy sources can be used to dissociate CO2 to CO and O2. The CO can be further processed to gaseous or liquid higher hydrocarbons thereby providing chemical storage of the energy, synthetic fuels or platform chemicals for the chemical industry. Applications of the afterglow of the plasma torch are the treatment of surfaces to increase the adhesion of lacquer, glue or paint, and the sterilization or decontamination of different kind of surfaces. The movie will explain how to ignite the plasma solely by microwave power without any additional igniters, e.g., electric sparks. The microwave plasma torch is based on a combination of two resonators &#8212; a coaxial one which provides the ignition of the plasma and a cylindrical one which guarantees a continuous and stable operation of the plasma after ignition. The plasma can be operated in a long microwave transparent tube for volume processes or shaped by orifices for surface treatment purposes.

Blast Quantification Using Hopkinson Pressure Bars

Near-field blast load measurement presents an issue to many sensor types as they must endure very aggressive environments and be able to measure pressures up to many hundreds of megapascals. In this respect the simplicity of the Hopkinson pressure bar has a major advantage in that while the measurement end of the Hopkinson bar can endure and be exposed to harsh conditions, the strain gauge mounted to the bar can be affixed some distance away. This allows protective housings to be utilized which protect the strain gauge but do not interfere with the measurement acquisition. The use of an array of pressure bars allows the pressure-time histories at discrete known points to be measured. This article also describes the interpolation routine used to derive pressure-time histories at un-instrumented locations on the plane of interest. Currently the technique has been used to measure loading from high explosives in free air and buried shallowly in various soils.

This protocol details the use of Hopkinson pressure bars to measure reflected blast loading from near-field explosive events. It is capable of interpolating a pressure-time history at any point on a reflective boundary and as such can be used to fully characterize the spatial and temporal variations in loading produced.

The Measurement of Unsteady Surface Pressure Using a Remote Microphone Probe

Microphones are widely applied to measure pressure fluctuations at the walls of solid bodies immersed in turbulent flows. Turbulent motions with various characteristic length scales can result in pressure fluctuations over a wide frequency range. This property of turbulence requires sensing devices to have sufficient sensitivity over a wide range of frequencies. Furthermore, the small characteristic length scales of turbulent structures require small sensing areas and the ability to place the sensors in very close proximity to each other. The complex geometries of the solid bodies, often including large surface curvatures or discontinuities, require the probe to have the ability to be set up in very limited spaces. The development of a remote microphone probe, which is inexpensive, consistent, and repeatable, is described in the present communication. It allows for the measurement of pressure fluctuations with high spatial resolution and dynamic response over a wide range of frequencies. The probe is small enough to be placed within the interior of typical wind tunnel models. The remote microphone probe includes a small, rigid, and hollow tube that penetrates the model surface to form the sensing area. This tube is connected to a standard microphone, at some distance away from the surface, using a "T" junction. An experimental method is introduced to determine the dynamic response of the remote microphone probe. In addition, an analytical method for determining the dynamic response is described. The analytical method can be applied in the design stage to determine the dimensions and properties of the RMP components.

Here, we present a protocol to measure, with high spatial resolution, the unsteady surface pressure in turbulent flows. This method demonstrates the construction of a remote microphone probe (RMP) and the determination of its frequency-dependent, complex transfer function. An analytical determination of the dynamic response is presented and validated.

Evanescent Field Based Photoacoustics: Optical Property Evaluation at Surfaces

Here, we present a protocol to estimate material and surface optical properties using the photoacoustic effect combined with total internal reflection. Optical property evaluation of thin films and the surfaces of bulk materials is an important step in understanding new optical material systems and their applications. The method presented can estimate thickness, refractive index, and use absorptive properties of materials for detection. This metrology system uses evanescent field-based photoacoustics (EFPA), a field of research based upon the interaction of an evanescent field with the photoacoustic effect. This interaction and its resulting family of techniques allow the technique to probe optical properties within a few hundred nanometers of the sample surface. This optical near field allows for the highly accurate estimation of material properties on the same scale as the field itself such as refractive index and film thickness. With the use of EFPA and its sub techniques such as total internal reflection photoacoustic spectroscopy (TIRPAS) and optical tunneling photoacoustic spectroscopy (OTPAS), it is possible to evaluate a material at the nanoscale in a consolidated instrument without the need for many instruments and experiments that may be cost prohibitive.

An Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Setup to Investigate the Reactive Species Formation

Non-thermal atmospheric pressure (&#39;cold&#39;) plasmas have received increased attention in recent years due to their significant biomedical potential. The reactions of cold plasma with the surrounding atmosphere yield a variety of reactive species, which can define its effectiveness. While efficient development of cold plasma therapy requires kinetic models, model benchmarking needs empirical data. Experimental studies of the source of reactive species detected in aqueous solutions exposed to plasma are still scarce. Biomedical plasma is often operated with He or Ar feed gas, and a specific interest lies in investigation of the reactive species generated by plasma with various gas admixtures (O2, N2, air, H2O vapor, etc.) Such investigations are very complex due to difficulties in controlling the ambient atmosphere in contact with the plasma effluent. In this work, we addressed common issues of &#39;high&#39; voltage kHz frequency driven plasma jet experimental studies. A reactor was developed allowing the exclusion of ambient atmosphere from the plasma-liquid system. The system thus comprised the feed gas with admixtures and the components of the liquid sample. This controlled atmosphere allowed the investigation of the source of the reactive oxygen species induced in aqueous solutions by He-water vapor plasma. The use of isotopically labelled water allowed distinguishing between the species originating in the gas phase and those formed in the liquid. The plasma equipment was contained inside a Faraday cage to eliminate possible influence of any external field. The setup is versatile and can aid in further understanding the cold plasma-liquid interactions chemistry.

An experimental setup was created for the helium-operated kHz frequency plasma jet. The setup includes a cage for the plasma power supply and jet and an in-house built reactor to monitor plasma-induced reactive species without the interference of the ambient atmosphere.

Spark Plasma Sintering Apparatus Used for the Formation of Strontium Titanate Bicrystals

A spark plasma sintering apparatus was used as a novel method for diffusion bonding of two single crystals of strontium titanate to form bicrystals with one twist grain boundary. This apparatus utilizes high uniaxial pressure and a pulsed direct current for rapid consolidation of material. Diffusion bonding of strontium titanate bicrystals without fracture, in a spark plasma sintering apparatus, is possible at high pressures due to the unusual temperature dependent plasticity behavior of strontium titanate. We demonstrate a method for the successful formation of bicrystals at accelerated time scales and lower temperatures in a spark plasma sintering apparatus compared to bicrystals formed by conventional diffusion bonding parameters. Bond quality was verified by scanning electron microscopy. A clean and atomically abrupt interface containing no secondary phases was observed using transmission electron microscopy techniques. Local changes in bonding across the boundary was characterized by simultaneous scanning transmission electron microscopy and spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy.

A viable technique for the formation of strontium titanate bicrystals at high pressure and fast heating rate via the spark plasma sintering apparatus is developed.

Pool-Boiling Heat-Transfer Enhancement on Cylindrical Surfaces with Hybrid Wettable Patterns

In this study, pool-boiling heat-transfer experiments were performed to investigate the effect of the number of interlines and the orientation of the hybrid wettable pattern. Hybrid wettable patterns were produced by coating superhydrophilic SiO2 on a masked, hydrophobic, cylindrical copper surface. Using de-ionized (DI) water as the working fluid, pool-boiling heat-transfer studies were conducted on the different surface-treated copper cylinders of a 25-mm diameter and a 40-mm length. The experimental results showed that the number of interlines and the orientation of the hybrid wettable pattern influenced the wall superheat and the HTC. By increasing the number of interlines, the HTC was enhanced when compared to the plain surface. Images obtained from the charge-coupled device (CCD) camera indicated that more bubbles formed on the interlines as compared to other parts. The hybrid wettable pattern with the lowermost section being hydrophobic gave the best heat-transfer coefficient (HTC). The experimental results indicated that the bubble dynamics of the surface is an important factor that determines the nucleate boiling.

New Application of an Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet as a Neuro-protective Agent Against Glucose Deprivation-induced Injury of SH-SY5Y Cells

The atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) has attracted the attention of many researchers from multiple disciplines in recent years because its emissions include multiple types of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our previous study has shown the cytoprotective effect of the APPJ against oxidative stress-induced injuries. The aim of the present study is to provide a detailed in vitro treatment protocol regarding the neuroprotective applications of helium APPJs on glucose deprivation-induced injury in SH-SY5Y cells. The SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma-derived cell line was maintained in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with 15% fetal calf serum. The culture medium was then changed to RPMI 1640 without glucose before APPJ treatment. After a 1 h incubation in a cell incubator, cell viability was determined using Cell Counting Kit 8. The results showed that, compared to the glucose deprivation group, cells treated with APPJ exhibited significantly increased cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, with 8 s/well observed as an optimal dose. Meanwhile, helium flow had no effect on the glucose deprivation-induced cell impairment. Our results indicated that APPJ could be potentially used as a treatment method for the diseases in the central nervous system related to glucose deprivation. This protocol could also be used as a cytoprotective application for other cells with different impairments, but the cell culture and APPJ treatment conditions should be readjusted, and the treatment dose must be relatively low.
