Baeckkyoung Sung received his BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Physics from the Department of Physics at Seoul National University, and then obtained PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Technology & Biopharmaceutics from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Université Paris-Sud XI in 2011. His PhD theses were on the topics of biofluid mechanics and DNA condensation, performed at the Center for Theoretical Physics (Seoul) and the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (Orsay), respectively. After completing the doctoral studies, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Liquid Crystal Institute & Department of Biological Sciences, Kent State University, Kent, OH, USA, and as a postdoc & research associate at the Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal, Pessac, France. In 2018, when he was in a research fellow position at the School of Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK, he joined the KIST Europe Forschungsgesellschaft mbH, Saarbrücken, Germany, as a senior researcher (permanent position). He has been leading research projects on bioengineering and mathematical biology, closely collaborating with experts at Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany.
