Kinga A. Unocic is a R&D Staff Scientist in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). She received her M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland, and her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
Her expertise is in the development and application of analytical electron microscopy and in situ/operando microscopy techniques to establish fundamental structure-property-performance relationships in a wide range of material systems. Her current research focuses on microstructural evolution and oxidation mechanisms in high temperature structural materials such as additively manufactured alloys, Ni-based superalloys, ODS ferritic and stainless steels. She also focuses on catalysis research such as biomass conversion into fuels and co-products, where she uses state-of-the-art in situ/operando microscopy techniques to study catalyst behaviour under dynamic reactive conditions.
Dr. Unocic has been recognized with several awards, including the 2019 ORNL finalist in the YWCA Tribute to Women, the 2017 TMS Young Leaders International Scholar – JIM Award and the 2010 TMS Young Leader Professional Development Award.
