The ABA experiment can be modified by experimenters to test different strains, ages, drugs, and various other variables of AN. Bearing in mind genetic variability, adjustments to the running wheel or food access period would increase or decrease the severity of symptoms and rate of dropout. This can serve to increase or decrease the length of the experiment, depending on the experimental question of interest.

Since 1953, rodents have been reported to show a paradoxical hyperactivity on running wheels when they are given free access to the wheels while undergoing voluntary hypophagia when food availability is restricted1. Conversely, rodents do not rapidly drop in body weight when offered food on a schedule without running wheels or when housed with running wheels and offered food ad libitum1,2,3. The ABA model reliably results in dramatic declines in body weight, hypophagia, hypothermia, loss of estrus, and increased stimulation of the HPA axis4. Ultimately, ABA results in death, unless the subject is removed from the paradigm5. The ABA paradigm provides researchers with an animal model of AN, a complex eating disorder which features severe dysregulation of appetite-behavior, affecting approximately 1 in 100 females and a smaller percentage of males6. Patients suffering from AN frequently exhibit hyperactivity, consisting of extreme amounts of exercise, and/or general restlessness7,8. With a mortality rate of approximately 10%, AN has the highest mortality rate among all psychiatric disorders9. Current treatment for AN is limited to cognitive therapies, as there are no approved pharmacological treatments for those suffering from AN10,11.
AN has typically been regarded as a disorder affecting primarily females. As a diagnosis that is 10 times more likely in females than males, female subjects are traditionally the focus in AN12. However, special consideration should be taken in excluding males from studies. While the diagnosis of AN remains lower in males, muscle dysmorphia (MD) is a condition that has many similarities to AN, in that body image is distorted and diet is often disordered. There is support for the notion that MD and AN may be classified in a similar manner13,14,15. This may suggest that some cases of MD represent the &#34;male version&#34; of AN. In the context of animal models, some reports have suggested that males are more susceptible than females to the ABA paradigm. For example, a recent study showed a higher mortality rate and decreased food intake compared to females in C57Bl/6 mice16. One predictor of susceptibility to ABA is spontaneous physical activity (SPA). Rats with higher or lower SPA are more likely to lose weight in the ABA paradigm, with male rats showing a stronger effect than females17. Conversely, female rodents have been observed to exercise more than males during the restriction phase of ABA18. Additionally, studies with Balb/cJ mice have shown the opposite effect of C57Bl/6 mice, where female mice have a higher mortality rate and decreased food intake compared to males (Figure 1)6. With varying results between the sexes in the ABA paradigm and increasing awareness of males with disordered eating patterns, both male and female subjects should be tested.
Aside from sex differences in the ABA paradigm, age and strain must be considered when choosing subjects. Adolescent mice may more accurately model AN, since AN typically emerges in adolescence, as observed with rats and mice19,20,21,22. Strains that are more active than others at a baseline level have a higher rate of susceptibility and severity of ABA23. Strains known to have higher levels of anxiety, such as DBA/2, have increased wheel running activity, which would indicate a faster dropout rate in the ABA paradigm24. Depending on the experimental design, the strain of choice can be tailored to maximize the duration of ABA.
The ABA paradox is not unique to mice. Other mammals including rats, hamsters, gerbils, pigs, chipmunks, and guinea pigs have demonstrated this phenomenon6. The conservation of the ABA phenomenon across mammalian species suggests that the ABA paradigm can provide a translational tool to investigate the mechanisms underlying anorexia-like behavior in humans. Mice in particular are well-suited for the study of mechanisms underlying ABA. Mice can be densely housed and generation time is relatively short. Mice have a fully sequenced genome, and numerous inbred, outbred, and special strains, such as congenics, are available. A vast number of genetically manipulated lines have been generated, making them ideal for studies assessing genetic influences on disorders such as AN. Depending on the question at hand, researchers may manipulate complex neural circuitry and/or gene expression to assess behavior in the ABA paradigm, potentially answering questions about genetic influence that are not possible when studying humans.
A limited number of animal models of AN currently exist. Stress models induce hypophagia in rodents using tail pinching, novelty-induced hypophagia, cold swimming, and brain stimulation. By inducing stress, changes in the HPA-axis decrease appetite resulting in reduced body weight25. However, the HPA-axis is also potently stimulated by ABA, which also incorporates additional features of AN such as hyperactivity. Another model to consider in studying AN is the chronic food restriction model. By limiting food to a range from 40 to 60% of ad libitum, one can mimic the physiological response to malnourishment26. Though this method is effective for studying the effects of inadequate feeding, it does not reproduce a core issue of AN, which is voluntary food restriction. In the ABA paradigm, animals are deprived of food access for part of the day, but also voluntarily reduce food intake if a wheel is also present. Genetic models have also been used to examine the etiology of AN. Researchers have found neurochemical and genetic factors implicated in AN, such as the gene BDNF and neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin27. The use of genetic models is crucial to understand the neural mechanisms behind AN. However, genome wide association studies for AN have not yet yielded significant hits, and no rare variants in AN have been identified. Future studies should combine a genetic approach with the ABA model to increase understanding of AN-related phenotypes.
Developing animal models for entire psychiatric disorders is virtually impossible due to the complexity and heterogeneity of human disorders. However, by modeling specific, well-defined components of a psychiatric disorder, unique insights into the underlying neurobiology or pathophysiology may be obtained. Such biological insights may then be used to identify novel treatments. The rodent ABA paradigm therefore provides a preclinical tool for studying the mechanisms underlying AN-like behavior that cannot ethically be studied in humans, such as the effects of genetic manipulations, perturbations to neural circuits, and the consequences of certain environmental factors.

Rodents develop activity-based anorexia (ABA) when exposed to a restricted feeding schedule and allowed free access to a running wheel. These conditions lead to a life-threatening reduction in body weight. However, rodents exposed to only one of these conditions ultimately adapt to re-establish normal body weight. Although increased running coupled with reduction in voluntary food intake appear paradoxical under ABA conditions, ABA behavior is observed across numerous mammalian species. 
The ABA paradigm provides an animal model for anorexia nervosa (AN), an eating disorder with severe dysregulation of appetite-behavior. Subjects are singly housed with free access to a running wheel. Each day, the subject is offered food for a limited amount of time. During the course of the experiment, a subject's body weight decreases from high activity and low caloric intake. The duration of the study varies based on how long food is offered daily, the type of food offered, the strain of mouse, if drugs are being tested, and environmental factors.
A lack of effective pharmacological treatments for AN patients, their low quality of life, high cost of treatment, and their high mortality rate indicate the urgency to further research AN. We provide a basic outline for performing ABA experiments with mice, offering a method to investigate AN-like behavior in order to develop novel therapies. This protocol is optimized for use in Balb/cJ mice, but can easily be manipulated for other strains, providing great flexibility in working with different questions, especially related to genetic factors of ABA.

Assessing Activity-based Anorexia in Mice

Mice individually housed with a running wheel while given limited access to food develop reductions in food consumption and increase activity on the running wheel. This experimental phenomenon is called activity-based anorexia. This paradigm provides an experimental tool for studying the neurobiology and behaviors underlying aspects of anorexia nervosa.

The overall goal of this experiment is to examine the neurobiology and behavior underlying anorexia nervosa. This method can help answer key questions in the field of psychiatry related to eating disorders such as what are the neural underpinnings of anorexia nervosa, and what brain circuits are involved. The main advantage of this technique is that it can be used to study some underlying mechanisms of anorexia, which can't be assessed in humans.Setup an experimental area by choosing a cage rack close to the laptop and wheel hubs. This will limit issues with data transmission. Now activate the connection between the wheel hubs and the software.First open the wheel management software to ensure both wireless hubs are active. From the software reset the default wheel connections. Open tools and select delete wheels.Repeat this step five times then close the software and reopen it. Next, provide power to the wheels. Connect the battery pack wires to the wheel hardware and insert the batteries into the wheel base.Then have a look at the software. The wheelbase should be listed with the ID of one under the appropriate wireless hub. If not, unhook the battery pack, delete the wheel in the software, and try again.If the wheel is recognized, replace the ID with the appropriate animal's ID.Next, adhere the running wheel's base to the bottom of the cage with duct tape to ensure stability. Do not allow any tape to stick out as mice will chew on exposed tape. Next, place a running wheel disc without a corroded magnetic on the base and rotate the wheel to verify clearance from the cage walls and grating.Spin the disc and check that each revolution registers properly with the software. Next, use duct tape to secure the food jar to the cage. Position it away from the running wheel and water bottle.Then place two pieces of chow in the jar, attach full water bottle to the cage, and add bedding to the cage bottom. After all the cages have been prepared in this manner, individually place mice into their appropriate cages. Once all the mice are in their cages, go to the software and click on file, and then start acquisition.Throughout the experiment start new acquisitions to breakup the trial phases. Now let the mice acclimate to the housing conditions for two full days. During this phase, decide if each mouse is healthy enough to handle the ABA experiment.On the third day of the experiment, measure out about nine grams chow and record the weight to 1/1000 of a gram. Next, carefully remove the mouse from the cage and weigh it in a large plastic beaker to and nearest tenth of a gram. Do this with minimal stress to the mouse.With the mouse out of the cage, search out and remove all of the food in the cage. Besides removing the food in the jar, look through the bedding for scattered food. Next, if needed, clean the running wheel with 70%isopropanol and paper towels.Before returning the mouse to its cage, be sure that the isopropanol has dried. Then load the mouse and the nine grams of chow into the cage. On the next day return to the animal facility within 10 minutes of the last visit.Again load nine grams of chow in a small plastic beaker and record the exact weight. Again gently remove the mouse and weigh it with minimal stress to the mouse. Now remove the food jar out of the cage and investigate it.Remove any feces with tweezers and use a strainer over the beaker to remove bedding. Crumble the larger pieces of food so they pass through the filter leaving just bedding in the strainer. Then search the cage bedding for food remnants and add them to the beaker.Then record the mass of the food that remained in the cage. Next, wipe the jar clean and return it to the cage empty. Apply new tape if necessary.Then load the jar with the prepared nine gram food ration. As before, clean any soiled running wheels and return them to the cages. Reset all the cages in this manner everyday.On days five, seven, and nine, restart the computer data acquisition in wheel running program. After collecting the baseline data, on day 11 restart the data acquisition and begin the restriction phase. Basically, follow the baseline protocol with a few changes.First, do not clear the running wheels when changing the food. Second, limit the animals'access to their nine grams food ration to just six hours. The feeding period can be diurnal or nocturnal.Both choices have merit. After six hours, weigh the food remaining in the jar and cage. At this point, if needed, clean the wheel, but do so quickly so the next cage can be rapidly attended to.On each and every day of the restriction phase, repeat this procedure. Now it becomes very important to monitor the animals'weight loss. If a mouse drops to 75%of its baseline body weight, remove it from the experiment.Provide these mice unlimited food from the cage floor and no access to a running wheel. After all the cages are assessed, euthanize the dropped mice unless their recovery is to be studied. Using the described experiment, a group of activity based anorexia mice were assessed along with three control groups.Following the described procedure, the food was restricted to six diurnal hours. When a mouse was dropped from the study due to excessive weight loss, a randomly selected control mouse was as well. Body weight was reduced on days one through five in both groups exposed to scheduled feeding, and this correlated logically with reduced food intake.Curiously, weight loss had no effect on wheel running activity. After the behavior study, brains were harvested and frozen for biochemical analysis. One analysis of tissue from the ventral tegmental area showed that the wheel running significantly increased BDNF expression while food restriction increased NCAM1 MRNA expression but did not alter BDNF MRNA expression.While attempting this procedure, it's important to remember to limit stress on the mice, be consistent in timing your measurements, be patient so you acquire accurate readings, and consistently check on the wheel running software for any technical issues. Following this procedure, other methods like immunohistochemistry and radioligand binding can be performed on mouse brains in order to answer additional questions pertaining to virus function in the anorexia paradigm.

Trace Fear Conditioning in Mice

In this experiment we present a technique to measure learning and memory. In the trace fear conditioning protocol presented here there are five pairings between a neutral stimulus and an unconditioned stimulus. There is a 20 sec trace period that separates each conditioning trial. On the following day freezing is measured during presentation of the conditioned stimulus (CS) and trace period. On the third day there is an 8 min test to measure contextual memory. The representative results are from mice that were presented with the aversive unconditioned stimulus (shock) compared to mice that received the tone presentations without the unconditioned stimulus. Trace fear conditioning has been successfully used to detect subtle learning and memory deficits and enhancements in mice that are not found with other fear conditioning methods. This type of fear conditioning is believed to be dependent upon connections between the medial prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus. One current controversy is whether this method is believed to be amygdala-independent. Therefore, other fear conditioning testing is needed to examine amygdala-dependent learning and memory effects, such as through the delay fear conditioning.

Assessing Functional Performance in the Mdx Mouse Model

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe and progressive muscle wasting disorder for which no cure is available. Nevertheless, several potential pharmaceutical compounds and gene therapy approaches have progressed into clinical trials. With improvement in muscle function being the most important end point in these trials, a lot of emphasis has been placed on setting up reliable, reproducible, and easy to perform functional tests to pre clinically assess muscle function, strength, condition, and coordination in the mdx mouse model for DMD. Both invasive and noninvasive tests are available. Tests that do not exacerbate the disease can be used to determine the natural history of the disease and the effects of therapeutic interventions (e.g. forelimb grip strength test, two different hanging tests using either a wire or a grid and rotarod running). Alternatively, forced treadmill running can be used to enhance disease progression and/or assess protective effects of therapeutic interventions on disease pathology. We here describe how to perform these most commonly used functional tests in a reliable and reproducible manner. Using these protocols based on standard operating procedures enables comparison of data between different laboratories.

Operant Procedures for Assessing Behavioral Flexibility in Rats

Executive functions consist of multiple high-level cognitive processes that drive rule generation and behavioral selection. An emergent property of these processes is the ability to adjust behavior in response to changes in one&#8217;s environment (i.e., behavioral flexibility). These processes are essential to normal human behavior, and may be disrupted in diverse neuropsychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia, alcoholism, depression, stroke, and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. Understanding of the neurobiology of executive functions has been greatly advanced by the availability of animal tasks for assessing discrete components of behavioral flexibility, particularly strategy shifting and reversal learning. While several types of tasks have been developed, most are non-automated, labor intensive, and allow testing of only one animal at a time. The recent development of automated, operant-based tasks for assessing behavioral flexibility streamlines testing, standardizes stimulus presentation and data recording, and dramatically improves throughput. Here, we describe automated strategy shifting and reversal tasks, using operant chambers controlled by custom written software programs. Using these tasks, we have shown that the medial prefrontal cortex governs strategy shifting but not reversal learning in the rat, similar to the dissociation observed in humans. Moreover, animals with a neonatal hippocampal lesion, a neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia, are selectively impaired on the strategy shifting task but not the reversal task. The strategy shifting task also allows the identification of separate types of performance errors, each of which is attributable to distinct neural substrates. The availability of these automated tasks, and the evidence supporting the dissociable contributions of separate prefrontal areas, makes them particularly well-suited assays for the investigation of basic neurobiological processes as well as drug discovery and screening in disease models.

The ability to assess executive functions such as behavioral flexibility in rats is useful for investigating the neurobiology of cognition in both intact animals and disease models. The Modified Hole Board - Measuring Behavior, Cognition and Social Interaction in Mice and Rats

This protocol describes the modified hole board (mHB), which combines features from a traditional hole board and open field and is designed to measure multiple dimensions of unconditioned behavior in small laboratory mammals (e.g., mice, rats, tree shrews and small primates). This paradigm is a valuable alternative for the use of a behavioral test battery, since a broad behavioral spectrum of an animal&#8217;s behavioral profile can be investigated in one single test.
The apparatus consists of a box, representing the &#8216;protected&#8217; area, separated from a group compartment. A board, on which small cylinders are staggered in three lines, is placed in the center of the box, representing the &#8216;unprotected&#8217; area of the set-up. The cognitive abilities of the animals can be measured by baiting some cylinders on the board and measuring the working and reference memory. Other unconditioned behavior, such as activity-related-, anxiety-related- and social behavior, can be observed using this paradigm. Behavioral flexibility and the ability to habituate to a novel environment can additionally be observed by subjecting the animals to multiple trials in the mHB, revealing insight into the animals&#8217; adaptive capacities.
Due to testing order effects in a behavioral test battery, na&#239;ve animals should be used for each individual experiment. By testing multiple behavioral dimensions in a single paradigm and thereby circumventing this issue, the number of experimental animals used is reduced. Furthermore, by avoiding social isolation during testing and without the need to food deprive the animals, the mHB represents a behavioral test system, inducing if any, very low amount of stress.

Using the Activity-based Anorexia Rodent Model to Study the Neurobiological Basis of Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric illness characterized by excessively restricted caloric intake and abnormally high levels of physical activity. A challenging illness to treat, due to the lack of understanding of the underlying neurobiology, AN has the highest mortality rate among psychiatric illnesses. To address this need, neuroscientists are using an animal model to study how neural circuits may contribute toward vulnerability to AN and may be affected by AN. Activity-based anorexia (ABA) is a bio-behavioral phenomenon described in rodents that models the key symptoms of anorexia nervosa. When rodents with free access to voluntary exercise on a running wheel experience food restriction, they become hyperactive &#8211; running more than animals with free access to food. Here, we describe the procedures by which ABA is induced in adolescent female C57BL/6 mice. On postnatal day 36 (P36), the animal is housed with access to voluntary exercise on a running wheel. After 4 days of acclimation to the running wheel, on P40, all food is removed from the cage. For the next 3 days, food is returned to the cage (allowing animals free food access) for 2 hr daily. After the fourth day of food restriction, free access to food is returned and the running wheel is removed from the cage to allow the animals to recover. Continuous multi-day analysis of running wheel activity shows that mice become hyperactive within 24 hr following the onset of food restriction. The mice run even during the limited time during which they have access to food. Additionally, the circadian pattern of wheel running becomes disrupted by the experience of food restriction. We have been able to correlate neurobiological changes with various aspects of the animals&#8217; wheel running behavior to implicate particular brain regions and neurochemical changes with resilience and vulnerability to food-restriction induced hyperactivity.

The Rodent Psychomotor Vigilance Test (rPVT): A Method for Assessing Neurobehavioral Performance in Rats and Mice

The human Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT) is a widely used procedure for measuring changes in fatigue and sustained attention. The present article describes a rodent version of the PVT&#8212;termed the &#34;rPVT&#34;&#8212;that measures similar aspects of attention (i.e., performance accuracy, motor speed, premature responding, and lapses in attention). Data are presented that demonstrate both the short- and long-term usefulness of the rPVT when employed with laboratory rats. Rats easily learn the rPVT, and learning to perform the basic procedure takes less than two weeks of training. Once acquired, rat performances in the rPVT show a high degree of similarity to these same performance measures in the human PVT, including similarities in, lapses in attention, reaction times, vigilance decrements across session time (i.e., the human &#34;time-on-task&#34; effects), and the response-stimulus interval (RSI) effect described for humans. Thus the rPVT can be an extremely valuable tool for assessing the effects of a wide range of variables on sustained attention quite similar to human PVT performances, and thus can be useful for developing novel treatments for neurobehavioral dysfunctions.

Assessing the Effects of Music Listening on Psychobiological Stress in Daily Life

Music listening is associated with stress-reducing effects. However, most of the results on music listening and stress were gathered in experimental settings. As music listening is a popular activity of daily life, it is of utmost importance to study the effects of music listening on psychobiological stress in an everyday, daily-life setting. Here, a study protocol is presented that allows the assessment of associations between music listening and psychobiological stress in daily life by noninvasively measuring salivary cortisol (as a marker of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis) and salivary alpha-amylase (as a marker of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)). The protocol includes advice on the study design (e.g., sampling protocol), the materials and methods (e.g., the assessment of psychobiological stress in daily life, the assessment of music listening, and the manual), the selection of participants (e.g., the approval of the institutional review board and inclusion criteria), and the statistical analyses (e.g., the multilevel approach). The representative results provide evidence for a stress-reducing effect of music listening in daily life. Particularly, specific reasons for listening to music (especially relaxation), as well as the presence of others while doing so, increase this stress-reducing effect. At the same time, music listening in daily life differentially affects the HPA axis and ANS functioning, thus emphasizing the need for a multi-dimensional assessment of stress in daily life.

Battery of Behavioral Tests Assessing General Locomotion, Muscular Strength, and Coordination in Mice

Behavioral testing is used in pre-clinical trials to assess the phenotypic effects and outcomes that a particular disease or treatment has on the animal&#39;s wellbeing and health. There are numerous behavioral tests that may be applied. We selected a test for general locomotion, the open field test (OFT); a test for muscular strength, the mesh test (MT); and a test for coordination, the rotarod test (RR). Testing can be accomplished on a weekly or monthly basis. As a test for general locomotion, the OFT works by objectively monitoring movement parameters while the mouse is in an open field apparatus. The field is generally a 2&#39; x 2&#39; box, and the movements are recorded through laser sensing or through video capture. The mouse is placed in the center of the open field and allowed to move freely for the test. The MT uses the latency for a mouse to fall off an inverted screen as a measure of muscular strength. A mouse is placed on a screen, which is inverted over a clear box, and is timed for their latency to fall. Three trials are performed, with the best of the three trials scored for that day. A score of 60 s is the maximum time a mouse is left inverted. Mice are given a 5-min rest period between mesh test trials. Lastly, an accelerated protocol on the RR assesses motor coordination and endurance. During a trial, a mouse walks on a rotating rod as it increases in speed from 4 rpm to 40 rpm over 5 min. The trial ends when the mouse touches the magnetized pressure sensor upon falling. Each mouse undergoes three trials, and the best trial is scored for that day. This combined behavioral data allows for the global assessment of mobility, coordination, strength, and movement of the test animals. At least two out of the three behavioral testing measures must show improvement for an animal to qualify as having overall improved motor function.

Three Laboratory Procedures for Assessing Different Manifestations of Impulsivity in Rats

The present article provides a guide for the conduction and analysis of three conditioning-based protocols to evaluate impulsivity in rats. Impulsivity is a meaningful concept because it is associated with psychiatric conditions in humans and with maladaptive behavior in non-human animals. It is believed that impulsivity is composed of separate factors. There are laboratory protocols devised to assess each of these factors using standardized automated equipment. Delay discounting is associated with the incapacity to be motivated by delayed outcomes. This factor is evaluated through intertemporal choice protocols, which consist&#160;of presenting the individual with a choice situation involving an immediate reward and a larger but delayed reward. Response inhibition deficit is associated with the incapacity to withhold prepotent responses. Differential reinforcement of low rates (DLR) and feature-negative discrimination protocols assess the response inhibition deficit factor of impulsivity. The former imposes a condition to a motivated individual in which most wait a minimum period of time for a response to be rewarded. The latter evaluates the capacity of individuals to refrain from food seeking responses when a signal of the absence of food is presented. The purpose of these protocols is to construct an objective quantitative measure of impulsivity, which serves to make cross-species comparisons, allowing the possibility of translational research. The advantages of these particular protocols include their easy set-up and application, which stems from the relatively small amount of equipment needed and the automated nature of these protocols.

We present three protocols that assess different forms of impulsivity in rats and other small mammals. Intertemporal choice procedures evaluate the tendency to discount the value of delayed outcomes. Assessing the Coherence of Parents' Short Narratives Regarding their Child Using the Five-Minute Speech Sample Procedure

Valid and efficient measures for assessing the quality of parent-child relationships are needed to facilitate research and evidence-based practice with parents. This paper focuses on such a method, namely Five-Minute Speech Sample-Coherence (FMSS-Coherence). In this method, a parent is asked to speak for five uninterrupted minutes about her/his child and their relationship. The resulted narrative is coded for coherence, namely the extent to which the parent provides&#160;in the narrative&#160;a clear, consistent, multidimensional and well-supported portrayal of the child. FMSS-Coherence is based on attachment research that shows that the coherence of parents&#8217; narratives is indicative of the quality of the parent-child relationship and child adjustment. It overcomes the limitations of attachment narrative measures which are typically labor intensive. FMSS-Coherence is less nuanced than extant attachment narrative measures. Yet, studies of families from different cultural backgrounds, across different child ages and in the context of typically developing children as well as children with special needs suggest that coherence can be reliably evaluated using the FMSS procedure. Furthermore, parents&#8217; FMSS-Coherence is associated with parenting quality and children&#8217;s socio-emotional adjustment. Thus, it holds promise for researchers and practitioners who seek a relatively time- and cost-effective method for assessing the coherence of parents&#8217; narratives regarding their child.
