ここでは、染色体上の単一の遺伝子座で異なる2つの B.サチリス 株間の種内競争を監視し、可視化するための非常に例示的な方法を提示する(図2)。この2株を、フルオロフォアYFPおよびCFPをコードする yfp および cfp 遺伝子で標識し、異なる栄養条件下で共栽培した。時間をかけてサンプリングし、寒天プレートに適切な希釈液をめっきすることにより、各培養物の生存者は、一般的なステレオ蛍光顕微鏡を使用して容易に監視することができます。この論文に記載されている手順は、細胞集団における有益および有害な突然変異の急速なクローン拡張および除去を、時間の経過とともに容易に行い、視覚化するのに適している。
