The aim of this protocol is to guide researchers and educators in the implementation and evaluation of the PS-I approach in real classroom contexts. According to some previous experiences, PS-I can help promote deep learning and motivation in students19,21,24, but there is a need for more research about its efficacy in students with different abilities and motivational predispositions14,<sup cl...

One of the questions that teachers are most concerned about currently is how to stimulate students&#39; reflection. This concern is common in courses of a mathematical nature, such as STEM courses (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), in which the abstraction of many concepts requires a high degree of reflection, yet many students report approaching these courses purely through memory-based methods1. In addition, students often show superficial learning of the concepts1,2,3. The difficulties that students experience applying reflection and deep learning processes, however, are not only cognitive. Many students feel anxiety and demotivation faced with these courses4,5. In fact, these difficulties tend to persist throughout students&#39; educations6. It is therefore important to explore educational strategies that motivationally and cognitively prepare students for deep learning, regardless of their differing predispositions.
It is particularly useful to find strategies that complement typical instructional approaches. One of the most typical being direct instruction. Direct instruction means fully guiding students from the introduction of novel concepts with explicit information about these concepts, then following that with consolidation strategies such as problem-solving activities, feedback, discussions, or further explanations7,8. Direct instruction can be effective for easily transmitting content8,9,10. However, students often do not reflect on important aspects, such as how the content relates to their personal knowledge, or potential procedures that could work and do not11. It is therefore important to introduce complementary strategies to make students think critically.
One such strategy is the Problem-Solving before Instruction (PS-I) approach12, also referred to as the Invention approach11 or the Productive Failure approach13. PS-I is different to direct instruction in the sense that students are not directly introduced to the concepts, instead there is a problem-solving phase prior to the typical direct instruction activities in which students seek individual solutions to problems before getting any explanation about procedures for solving them.
In this initial problem, students are not expected to fully discover the target concepts13. Students may also feel cognitive overload14,15,16 and even negative affect17 with the uncertainty and the many aspects to consider. However, this experience can be productive in the long term because it can facilitate critical thinking about important features. Specifically, the initial problem can help students to become more aware of the gaps in their knowledge18,activate prior knowledge related to the content to cover13, and increase motivation because of the opportunity to base their learning on personal knowledge7,17,19.
In terms of learning, the effects of PS-I are generally seen when the results are evaluated with deep learning indicators20,21. In general no differences have been found between students who learned through PS-I and those who learned through direct instruction in terms of procedural knowledge20,22, which refers to the ability to reproduce learned procedures. However, students who go through PS-I generally exhibit higher learning in conceptual knowledge7,19,23, which refers to understanding the content covered, and transfer7,15,19,24, which refers to capacity to apply this understanding to novel situations. For example, a recent study in a class about statistical variability showed that students who were given the opportunity to invent their own solutions to measure statistical variability before receiving explanations about the general concepts and procedures in this topic demostrated better understanding at the end of the class than those who were able to directly study the relevant concepts and procedures before getting involved in any problem-solving activity23. However, some studies have shown no differences in learning16,25,26 or motivation19,26 between PS-I and direct instruction alternatives, or even better learning in direct instruction alternatives14,26, and it is important to consider potential sources of variability.
The design features underlying the implementation of PS-I are an important feature20. A systematic review20 found that there was more likely to be a learning advantage for PS-I over direct instruction alternatives when the PS-I interventions were implemented with at least one of two strategies, either formulating the initial problem with contrasting cases, or building the subsequent instruction with detailed feedback about the students&#39; solutions. Contrasting cases consist of simplified examples that differ in a few important characteristics11 (see Figure 1 for an example), and can help students identify relevant features and evaluate their own solutions during the initial problem11,20. The second strategy, providing explanations that build on the students&#39; solutions13, consist of explaining the canonical concept while giving feedback about the affordances and limitations of solutions generated by students, which can also help students focus on relevant features and evaluate the gaps in their own knowledge20, but after the initial problem-solving phase is completed (see Figure 3 for an example of the scaffolding from students&#39; typical solutions).
Given the support in the literature for these two strategies, contrasting cases and building instruction on students&#39; solutions, it is important consider them when promoting the inclusion of PS-I in real educational practice. This is the first goal of our protocol. The protocol provides materials for a PS-I intervention that incorporate these two principles. It is a protocol that,&#160;while adaptable, it is contextualized for a lesson on statistical variability, a very common lesson for university and high school students, who are generally the target populations in the literature on PS-I29. The initial problem-solving phase consists of inventing variability measures for income distributions in countries, which is a controversial topic30 that may be familiar to students in many learning areas. Then materials are provided for students to study solutions to this problem in a worked example, and for a lecture that incorporates discussion of common solutions produced by students along with embedded practice problems.
The second goal of our protocol is to make the experimental evaluation of PS-I accessible to educators and researchers, which can facilitate the investigation of PS-I from a greater variety of perspectives while maintaining some conditions constant across the literature. Yet conditions of this experimental evaluation are flexible to modifications.&#160;The experimental evaluation described in the protocol can be applied in ordinary lessons, since students in a single class can be assigned the materials for the PS-I condition or the materials for a direct instruction condition at the same time (Figure 4). This direct instruction condition is also adaptable to research and education needs, but as originally described in the protocol students start by getting the initial explanations about the target concept with the worked example, and then consolidate this knowledge with a practice problem (only presented in this condition to compensate for the time PS-I students spend on the initial problem), and with the lecture23. Potential adaptations include starting with the lecture and then having students to do the problem-solving activity, which is a typical control condition for comparing PS-I that has often led to better learning for the PS-I condition7,13,19,26. Alternatively, the control condition can be reduced to the exploration of a worked example followed by the lecture phase, which, although a more simplified version of direct instruction approaches than originally proposed, is more common in the literature and has led to varied results, with some studies indicating better learning in PS-I15,24, and others indicating better learning from this type of direct instruction condition14,26.
Finally, a third goal of the protocol is to provide resources for evaluating how students with different predispositions and cognitive abilities can benefit from PS-I15. The evaluation of these predispositions is especially important if we consider the negative predispositions that some students often have with STEM courses, and the fact that PS-I can still produce negative reactions in some cases14. There is, however, little research on this.
On the one hand, since PS-I facilitates the association of learning with individual ideas, rather than just formal knowledge, PS-I can be hypothesized as being able to help motivate students from low academic levels, those who have low feelings of competence, or low motivation about the subject13,27. One study showed that students with low mastery orientation, i.e., fewer goals related to personal learning, benefited more from PS-I than those with higher motivation to learn27. On the other hand, students with other profiles might encounter difficulties when involved in PS-I. More specifically, metacognition plays an important role in PS-I31, and students with low metacognition skills might not benefit from PS-I due to difficulties in being aware of their knowledge gaps or discerning relevant content15. In addition, as the initial phase of PS-I is based on the production of individual solutions, students with low divergent abilities, difficulties generating a variety of responses in a given situation, might benefit less from PS-I than other students. The protocol presents reliable instruments to assess for these predispositions (Table 1) although others may be considered.
In summary, this protocol aims to make an implementation of a PS-I intervention that follows accepted principles in the PS-I literature accessible to educators and researchers. Additionally, the protocols provide an experimental evaluation of this intervention, and facilitate the evaluation of students&#39; cognitive and motivational predispositions. It is a protocol that does not require access to new technologies or specific resources, and one that can be modified based on research and educational needs.

Nowadays, how to encourage students' reflective thinking is one of the main concerns for teachers at various educational levels. Many students have difficulties when facing tasks that involve high levels of reflection, such as on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses. Many also have deep-rooted anxiety and demotivation towards such courses. In order to overcome these cognitive and affective challenges, researchers have suggested the use of "Problem-Solving before Instruction" (PS-I) approaches. PS-I consists of giving students the opportunity to generate individual solutions to problems that are later solved in class. These solutions are compared with the canonical solution in the following phase of instruction, together with the presentation of the lesson content. It has been suggested that with this approach students can increase their conceptual understanding, transfer their learning to different tasks and contexts, become more aware of the gaps in their knowledge, and generate a personal construct of previous knowledge that can help maintain their motivation. Despite the advantages, this approach has been criticized, as students might spend a lot of time on aimless trial and error during the initial phase of solution generation or they may even feel frustrated in this process, which might be detrimental to future learning. More importantly, there is little research about how pre-existing student characteristics can help them to benefit (or not) from this approach. The aim of the current study is to present the design and implementation of the PS-I approach applied to statistics learning in undergraduate students, as well as a methodological approach used to evaluate its efficacy considering students' pre-existing differences.

This protocol was satisfactorily implemented in a previous study23, with the exception of the measures of students&#39; predispositions in terms of their sense of competence, mastery approach goals, metacognition, and divergent thinking.

Practical Methodology of Cognitive Tasks Within a Navigational Assessment

This paper describes an approach for measuring navigation accuracy relative to cognitive skills. The methodology behind the assessment will thus be clearly outlined in a step-by-step manner. Navigational skills are important when trying to find symbols within a speech-generating device (SGD) that has a dynamic screen and taxonomical organization. The following skills have been found to impact children&#8217;s ability to find symbols when navigating within the levels of an SGD: sustained attention, categorization, cognitive flexibility, and fluid reasoning1,2. According to past studies, working memory was not correlated with navigation1,2.
The materials needed for this method include a computerized tablet, an augmentative and alternative communication application, a booklet of symbols, and the Leiter International Performance Scale-Revised (Leiter-R)3. This method has been used in two previous studies. Robillard, Mayer-Crittenden, Roy-Charland, Minor-Corriveau and B&#233;langer1 assessed typically developing children, while Rondeau, Robillard and Roy-Charland2 assessed children and adolescents with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The direct observation of this method will facilitate the replication of this study for researchers. It will also help clinicians that work with children who have complex communication needs to determine the children&#8217;s ability to navigate an SGD with taxonomical categorization.

An Electrophysiology Protocol to Measure Reward Anticipation and Processing in Children

We present a protocol designed to measure the neural correlates of reward in children. The protocol allows researchers to measure both reward anticipation and processing. Its purpose is to create a reward task that is appropriate for young children with and without autism while controlling reward properties between two conditions: social and nonsocial. The current protocol allows for comparisons of brain activity between social and nonsocial reward conditions while keeping the reward itself identical between conditions. Using this protocol, we found evidence that neurotypical children demonstrate enhanced anticipatory brain activity during the social condition. Furthermore, we found that neurotypical children anticipate social reward more robustly than children with autism diagnoses. As the task uses snacks as a reward, it is most appropriate for young children. However, the protocol may be adapted for use with adolescent or adult populations if snacks are replaced by monetary incentives. The protocol is designed to measure electrophysiological events (event-related potentials), but it may be customized for use with eye-tracking or fMRI.

Universal Screening for Prevention of Reading, Writing, and Math Disabilities in Spanish

The purpose of this study was to describe a Spanish protocol that includes reading, writing, and math Curriculum-Based Measures (CBMs) aimed at early detection of students at risk of presenting learning disabilities (LD). Early identification of LD is a critical component of the Response to Intervention (RtI) model. In early grades, the screening of foundational skills mentioned above can provide a data-based guideline for identifying students requiring a more intensive response-based intervention before starting elementary school. We designed different CBMs based on indicators of basic early reading, writing, and math skills [Indicadores de Progreso de Aprendizaje en Lectura, Escritura y Matem&#225;ticas, IPAL, IPAE, and IPAM respectively]&#160;that aim to fulfill the twofold objective of universal screening and evaluation of the Spanish students&#8217; progress. For reading, IPAL includes alphabetic principle, phonological awareness, concepts about print, and riddles in kindergarten. In first and second grades, IPAL includes alphabetic principle, nonsense words fluency, maze sentences, and oral reading fluency. In addition, it includes phonemic segmentation for first grade and prosody for second grade. For writing, IPAE includes copying letters, writing allographs, dictated letters, dictated words with arbitrary spelling, dictated words with rule-based spelling, dictated nonsense words, dictated sentences, writing sentences, and writing a story for first-third grades. Finally, for math, IPAM includes number comparison, missing number, number identification, quantity array, and counting aloud for kindergarten, and number comparison, multi-digit computation, missing number, single-digit computation, and place value for first-third grades.

Measuring the Functional Abilities of Children Aged 3-6 Years Old with Observational Methods and Computer Tools

The analysis of functional abilities and their development in early childhood (0-6 years old) are fundamental aspects among young children with certain types of developmental difficulties that can facilitate prevention, through programmed interventions adapted to the needs of each user (student or patient). There are, however, few investigations to date, that have analyzed the use of automated tools for recording and interpreting the results of the initial assessment. Here, a protocol is presented to examine the functional abilities in early childhood in young children, aged between 3-6 years old, with intellectual disabilities, but the protocol can also be used for ages 0 to 6 years. The protocol makes use of a computer application, eEarlyCare, that facilitates the interpretation of the results of systematic observations, which are recorded in natural environments by professionals trained in early intervention. The software can be used to analyze 11 functional areas (Food Autonomy, Personal Care and Hygiene, Dressing and Undressing Independently, Sphincter Control, Functional Mobility, Communication and Language, Daily Life Routines, Adaptive Behavior and Attention) and a total of 114 different behaviors. Its use facilitates the analysis of the observed abilities and greatly assists early intervention. Compared to other observational methods, it allows a more efficient use of personal and material resources. The use of the computer application facilitates the recording of the observation results, which helps with organization and reflection on the observations. The software displays the observation results on-screen compared to normal developmental parameters. This information can be referred to for decision-making about the most suitable intervention program for each user (student or patient). Likewise, clustering techniques are applied to analyze the relation between the type of intellectual disabilities and functional development identified with the software, a relation that is intended to serve as a guide for early-care professional intervention.

Multimodal Protocol for Assessing Metacognition and Self-Regulation in Adults with Learning Difficulties

Learning disabilities (LDs) encompass disorders of those who have difficulty learning and using academic skills, exhibiting performance below expectations for their chronological age in the areas of reading, writing, and/or mathematics. Each of the disorders making up the LDs involve different deficits; however, some commonalities can be found within that heterogeneity, such in terms of learning self-regulation and metacognition. Unlike in early ages and later educational levels, there are hardly any evidence-based evaluation protocols for adults with LDs. LDs influence academic performance but also have serious consequences in professional, social, and family contexts. In response to this, the current work proposes a multimodal evaluation protocol focused on metacognitive, self-regulation of learning, and emotional processes, which make up the basis of the difficulties in adults with LDs. The assessment is carried out through analysis of the on-line learning process using a variety methods, techniques, and sensors (e.g., eye tracking, facial expressions of emotion, physiological responses, concurrent verbalizations, log files, screen recordings of human-machine interactions) and off-line methods (e.g., questionnaires, interviews, and self-report measures). This theoretically-driven and empirically-based guideline aims to provide an accurate assessment of LDs in adulthood in order to design effective prevention and intervention proposals.

The current work proposes a multimodal evaluation protocol focused on metacognitive, self-regulation of learning, and emotional processes, which make up the basis of the difficulties in adults with LDs.

Assessing Dyslexia at Six Year of Age

In recent years, there has been an increase in the prevalence of dyslexia at early ages in different countries and regions. This increase has serious consequences within school and family settings, due to the poor academic performance that characterizes people with dyslexia and the socio-emotional problems they sometimes display. One of the most frequent problems in the identification of the dyslexia is the lack of a common diagnostic protocol that encompasses specific criteria for the assessment of any child. The Learning Disabilities and Development Disorders research group at the University of Malaga has developed a protocol for the early detection of dyslexia. The protocol is based on the diagnostic and response to intervention models. Consequently, it takes into account diagnostic criteria agreed upon by some associations and committees of experts, as well as certain specific cognitive and language determinants that characterize people who present with dyslexia following adequate instruction, according to recent research. The action protocol is developed over several stages, and we propose the use of structured interviews with parents and teachers alongside standardized tests for the evaluation of intelligence, reading and writing, as well as the risk factors that determine the appearance of the problem. This action protocol provides a model for the detection of dyslexia, which seeks to distinguish it from other comorbid problems and identify its characteristics and determinants, in order to offer effective intervention and/or prevention from an early age.

Multimedia Battery for Assessment of Cognitive and Basic Skills in Mathematics (BM-PROMA)

Learning mathematics is a complex process that requires the development of multiple domain-general and domain-specific skills. It is therefore not unexpected that many children struggle to stay at grade level, and this becomes especially difficult when several abilities from both domains are impaired, as in the case of mathematical learning disabilities (MLD). Surprisingly, although MLD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders affecting schoolchildren, most of the diagnostic instruments available do not include assessment of domain-general and domain-specific skills. Furthermore, very few are computerized. To the best of our knowledge, there is no tool with these features for Spanish-speaking children. The purpose of this study was to describe the protocol for the diagnosis of Spanish MLD children using the BM-PROMA multimedia battery. BM-PROMA facilitates the evaluation of both skill domains, and the 12&#160;tasks included for this purpose are empirically evidence-based. The strong internal consistency of BM-PROMA and its multidimensional internal structure are demonstrated. BM-PROMA proves to be an appropriate tool for diagnosing children with MLD during primary education. It provides a broad cognitive profile for the child, which will be relevant not only for diagnosis but also for individualized instructional planning.

Computerized Dyslexia Assessment for Spanish-Speaking Children Using SICOLE-R

Advancing Dyslexia Assessment in Children Through Computerized Testing

The acquisition of reading skills is an intricate process that demands the cultivation of various domain-general and domain-specific abilities. Consequently, it is unsurprising that many children grapple with maintaining proficiency at the grade level, particularly when confronted with challenges spanning multiple abilities across both domains, as observed in individuals with reading difficulties. Strikingly, despite reading difficulties being among the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders affecting school-aged children, the majority of available diagnostic tools lack a comprehensive framework for assessing the full spectrum of cognitive skills linked to dyslexia, with minimal computerized options. Notably, there are currently limited tools with these features available for Spanish-speaking children. The aim of this study was to delineate the protocol for diagnosing Spanish-speaking children with reading difficulties using the Sicole-R multimedia battery. This tool for elementary grades focuses on evaluating cognitive skills that are associated with dyslexia as prescribed by the scientific literature. Specifically, it concentrates on assessing a range of cognitive abilities that studies have demonstrated to be linked to dyslexia. This focus is based on the observation that individuals with dyslexia typically exhibit deficits in several of the cognitive areas evaluated by this digital tool. The robust internal consistency and multidimensional internal structure of the battery were demonstrated. This multimedia battery has proven to be a fitting tool for diagnosing children with reading difficulties in primary education, offering a comprehensive cognitive profile that is valuable not only for diagnostic purposes but also for tailoring individualized instructional plans.

This familiarization protocol uses Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) to increase research participants&#39; knowledge and understanding of the specific activities and steps of the research protocol. The tools in this familiarization protocol are a social narrative, a visual schedule, the Premack principle, role-playing, and modeling. The goal of this familiarization protocol is to increase understanding and agency and to potentially reduce anxiety for child participants, resulting in a greater likelihood of the successful completion of the research protocol for the collection of EEG/ERP data.

Involving Individuals with Developmental Language Disorder and Their Parents/Carers in Research Priority Setting

A protocol for involving individuals presenting with developmental language disorder (DLD) (iDLD) and their parents/carers (iDLDPC) in a research priority setting exercise is presented.
iDLD have difficulties with communication skills, such as understanding language, word-finding and discourse. Such difficulties mean existing research priority setting protocols are difficult for iDLD to access, since they require sophisticated communication skills. Thus, a novel protocol for involving iDLD in these exercises is warranted. The same protocol is recommended for use with iDLDPC, to ensure accessibility.
The protocol is presented in 4 steps. Step 1 describes a program of activities delivered by trained, specialist DLD speech and language therapists (SLTs) that prepares iDLD/iDLDPC for involvement. Step 2 outlines an approach to elicit iDLD/iDLDPC&#8217;s opinions on research priorities. Steps 3 and 4 describe methods to analyze and integrate this data at multiple stages of the research priority setting process.
9 trained specialist DLD SLTs delivered steps 1 and 2. 17 iDLDs and 25 iDLDPCs consented to involvement. Opinions from all participants were elicited, and this data was used to influence the process and output of the exercise.
An advantage of this protocol is its accommodation of the heterogeneity in support needs of iDLD/iDLDPC, through a menu of options, whilst also providing a structured framework. Due to the novelty of the protocol, the methods for data integration were developed by the research group. These are potential limitations of the protocol, and may bring the reliability and validity under scrutiny, which are yet to be tested.
This protocol enables meaningful involvement of iDLD/iDLDPC in&#160;research priority setting and could be utilized for people with other kinds of speech, language or communication needs. Further research should evaluate the effectiveness of the protocol and whether it can be adapted for involvement of such populations in other research studies.
