MOS 主要负责检测到达鼻腔的挥发性化学分子。这是通过嗅觉感觉神经元 (OSN) 完成的,OSN 填充了系统的感觉界面 - 主要嗅觉上皮 (MOE)。每个 OSN 以单基因和单等位基因方式表达数千个嗅觉受体 (OR) 中的一个5。此外,ORs 往往是广义调谐的 6,单个气味剂可能与多个 OR 结合,从而生成气味7 的组合密码。
