When epidermal sheets of adult skin from C57BL/6 are infected with HSV-1 at approximately 100 PFU/cell, we observe infection in nearly all cells of the basal layer in the interfollicular epidermis while lower virus doses correlate with less infected cells and a slower progress of infection.
